November 5, 2007 - The number one ranked Sheridan Bruins got off to a hot start winning their regular season opener as well as the annual Bruins Bash Tournament title. In the East Region, Centennial and Fleming picked up another pair of wins to remain perfect atop of the standings while the Durham Lords and George Brown Huskies bounced back after rocky starts.
EAST REGION
The Centennial Colts are enjoying success after joining the East Region as they picked up another pair of wins, upping their record to 4-0. Despite never trailing in the first half against the Lancers, the Colts only held a narrow three point lead heading into the locker rooms. The Colts came out charging in the second, led by Raseedi "Rush" McKenley who scored 22 points in the half leading the Colts to an 85-60 victory. Colts guard Aundre Rose continued his excellent season as he also drained 22 points in the win.
On Friday, the Colts picked up their fourth consecutive league victory with a convincing 95-50 win over the La Cite Coyotes. The Colts came out on fire in the contest going on a 32-6 run to start the game. The Coyotes struggled to stop the Colts offense allowing Centennial to record their highest scoring total of the year at 95 points. Third year Toronto native Odane Harding picked up a double-double in the victory scoring 14 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Teammate Andre Bell had an impressive game from the floor shooting 75% enroute to scoring a team-high 17 points. Louis-Philippe Gauthier was the lone bright spot for La Cite who recorded a double-double leading all players with a 28 point, 11 rebound performance.
The Fleming Knights also remained perfect (3-0) with a pair of wins this past week. The Knights opened their week up with a 90-80 win over the previously fourth ranked Durham Lords. The Lords went into the half with a two point lead but the Knights managed to bounce back shooting 60.6% in the second frame going on to the upset win. Jovain Wilson and Zeljko Vinkovich led the charge for the Knights combining for 51 points in the ten point victory.
The Knights continued their winning streak after defeating the Cambrian Golden Shield 86-81 in the Knights’ home opener. Fleming’s Neil O’Sullivan had the hot hand on this night scoring 26 points, including four from behind the arc to lead all scorers. Wilson continued his fine freshmen season netting 21 points in the win. The win marks the first time since 2000-01 that Fleming has won their home opener.
The George Brown Huskies rebounded after an opening night loss with a pair of wins this past week. The Huskies began their week off on the right foot as they defeated the Georgian Grizzlies 81-71 on Halloween night. Freshmen starter Collin Whitely of Toronto “tricked” Georgian’s defense and “treated” George Brown’s fans to an amazing performance as he led the Huskies to victory scoring 41 points in the win. He shot an amazing 16-for-18 from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc.
On Friday night, the Seneca Sting made the trip down the DVP looking to win their season debut at George Brown. After forty minutes of play, the teams found themselves in a deadlock at 62 points piece. In overtime, the Sting were looking as if they were going to cruise to victory going out in front by six points. The Huskies managed to wake up, going on a 7-0 run to steal the “W” from the Sting and sending the hometown crowd happy once again.
Seneca managed to rebound after the overtime loss and defeated La Cite 75-61, which saw eleven Seneca players recording points in the game. Seneca is now 1-1 with two home games on the schedule this week.
The Durham Lords rebounded after opening up the season at 0-2 by defeating the Cambrian Golden Shield 101-71 and the Georgian Grizzlies 85-77 on their home court. In their game against Cambrian, the Lords got out a 20-point half-time lead shooting an impressive 66.7% from the field. At the final buzzer, the Lords scored a season high 101 points led by guards Courtney Small and Evan Browne who scored 17 and 16 points respectively. In their win over Georgian, perennial all-star Anthony Batchelor scored a game high 28 points while 7’0 freshmen forward, Liam McMorrow, hauled in 18 rebounds.

WEST REGION
The number one ranked Sheridan Bruins opened up their season with a 73-68 victory over the defending champion Fanshawe Falcons on Halloween night. The Bruins must have spooked the Falcons at the opening tip-off as they went out to a 44-28 half-time lead. After the break, the Falcons managed to claw back into the game narrowing to the gap to just three points, but Sheridan stayed composed and won their regular season opener by a five point margin. Tab Donaldson had an impressive debut for the Bruins scoring 20 points and adding 3 steals. Shane Reece also contributed to the Bruins victory with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
The Humber Hawks re-entered the top five rankings picking up a pair of wins on their road trip to Sault Ste. Marie over the weekend. In their first game of the week, the Hawks shut down the high scoring Thunderbird’s attack, limiting them to just 23 first half points enroute to a 63-55 victory. Mark McNee had a shining debut for the Hawks scoring a team high 19 points. Vyron Phillips of Algoma scored an impressive 27 points in the loss.
The Hawks then traveled across town where they went on to beat the Sault Cougars 97-55. 2005 OCAA Championship MVP Jose Araujo was 6-for-9 from beyond the arc, going on to lead the Hawks in scoring with 20 points. The Hawks are now 2-0 with a game against the second ranked Niagara Knights scheduled for Tuesday night in Welland.
Speaking of the Knights, they picked up their third win of the year after defeating the Lambton Lions 86-85 on the road. Down by three points in the final minutes, the Knights found away to score a pair of buckets highlighted by a reverse lay-up by Anthony McAllese at the buzzer to give the Knights the nail-biting victory. The one-two punch of Niagara guards Anthony McAleese and Phil Ramirez was impressive once again, as they combined for 39 points in the win. Chad Periera and David Akelatis led the game in scoring with 25 points a piece but it just wasn’t enough as the Lions dropped to the .500 mark. Niagara also defeated Jamestown College of Western New York in exhibition action this week.

BRUINS BASH INVITATIONAL
Although it was anything but smooth sailing, the Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team claimed the championship in the 16th annual Bruins Bash after a 77-75 victory over Fanshawe in the final.
"It's nice, because it's our own tournament," head coach Jim Flack said. "There's a sense of relief that we've defended our home turf and the best part about the tournament is the fact that it was a good test for us."
Second year forward Nes Bratic played some key minutes in the tournament, especially in the final, and was named the MVP.
"Winning (the tournament) is a big stepping stone for us," Bratic said. "We got closer in this tournament as a team."
Fifth year guard Maurice Smith was a key offensive spark plug off the bench for the Bruins in the Final, pouring in 29 points and was named a tournament all-star in the process.
"We showed a lot by battling some adversity," he said. "We were down a point after they went on a run with less than five minutes to play and we still came back to win."
Notes: Since the program moved to Brampton in 2005, this is the first time the Bruins have won their own tournament. With victories over Ahuntsic and Edouard Monpetit, the Bruins are now 6-0 against teams from Quebec this year.
