HUMBER NO. 1 IN OCAA WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL RANKINGS
TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s volleyball season is a week old and already a familiar team finds itself on top of the weekly provincial rankings.

finds itself on top of the weekly provincial rankings.
1. Humber Hawks
The four-time defending OCAA champion Humber Hawks (2-0) jumped out
to a pair of 3-1 victories at home to begin their season.
Humber defeated No. 5 Niagara (25-15, 22-25, 25-10, 25-5) on
Thursday and No. 4 Fanshawe (25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13) on
Saturday.
Kris Dowling and Kelly Nyhof each
had 10-kill performances against Niagara. Nyhof led the way with 15
kills, four serving aces and a pair of stuff blocks for 21 points
against Fanshawe.
Humber hosts Canadore and arch rival No. 2 Nipissing in matches
this weekend.
2. Nipissing Lakers
The four-time defending OCAA silver medalist Nipissing Lakers (2-0)
are also in a familiar spot with straight-set victories over
Conestoga (25-18, 25-15, 25-6) on Saturday and No. 10 Sheridan
(25-15, 25-16, 25-13) on Sunday.
Lucia Demarco led Nipissing with a 10-point effort
against Conestoga, contributing eight kills, one serving ace and
one stuff block. Teammate Brittany Ardron earned
nine kills against Sheridan to go with her two aces and one block
for a dozen points.
Nipissing hits the road for the first time this regular season with
stops at No. 9 St. Clair on Friday and No. 1 Humber on Sunday.
3. Cambrian Golden Shield
The defending East region champion Cambrian Golden Shield (2-0)
have picked up where they left off in 2010-11, winning two straight
on the road.
Cambrian defeated No. 8 Seneca 3-1 (29-27, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16) on
Friday. Cambrian's Kelsey Fielding was a force to
be reckoned with with a 26-point effort, including 20 kills, five
serving aces and one stuff block.
Cambrian outlasted No. 7 Georgian 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 25-21,
15-12) on Saturday. Again, Fielding put on an impressive
performance with 24 kills and three serving aces totalling 27
points.
Cambrian hosts its first home games of the regular season this
weekend against Algonquin and La Cite.
4. Fanshawe Falcons
The defending OCAA bronze medalist Fanshawe Falcons (1-1) opened
the regular season with a 3-2 (25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-8)
victory at Redeemer on Thursday, followed by its loss to No. 1
Humber.
Kaitlyn Kelly led the Falcons with nine kills and
two serving aces totalling 11 offensive points. Kelly and
Shelby Charlton each had seven kills in the loss
at Humber.
Fanshawe finishes its stretch of three straight road games at No.
10 Sheridan on Wednesday, followed by its home opener against No. 6
Mohawk on Friday.
5. Niagara Knights
The Niagara Knights (0-1) had a tough assignment in their opening
match against Humber.
Lindsay Murray earned 10 offensive points in the
loss with eight kills and two serving aces.
Niagara looks to get into the win column on Wednesday in its home
opener against Redeemer.
6. Mohawk Mountaineers
Mohawk (0-1) had a set back in its home opener, losing 3-0 (25-16,
26-24, 28-26) to No. 9 St. Clair on Saturday.
Jenna Gignac led Mohawk with nine points and seven
kills. She also contributed one serving ace and one stuff block in
the loss.
Mohawk visits No. 4 Fanshawe on Friday.
7. Georgian Grizzlies
The Georgian Grizzlies (2-1) have been strong out of the gate, with
their only blemish coming in a five-set loss to Cambrian at home on
Saturday.
Georgian won at Durham 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) on Tuesday, and
defeated Boreal 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-10) on Sunday.
Kelsey Buckley produced a dozen offensive points
against Durham with 10 kills, one serving ace and one stuff block.
Teammate Bailee Yasher led the Grizzlies with 15
points in their loss to Cambrian, with 11 kills, three serving aces
and one stuff block. Yasher also contributed seven kills and one
ace against Boreal.
Georgian visits Peterborough, Ont. this weekend with games at
Fleming and Trent.
8. Seneca Sting
Seneca (1-1) lost to No. 3 Cambrian in its season opener on Friday,
but won 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-17) against Boreal on Saturday.
Seneca's Guilia DiGiorgio earned a dozen offensive
points in a losing cause, with five kills and five serving aces
versus Cambrian. Kimberly Cedros led the Sting
with 10 offensive points against Boreal, including eight kills and
two serving aces.
Seneca heads out to Peterborough, Ont. this weekend with games at
Trent and Fleming.
9. St. Clair Saints
The St. Clair Saints (1-0) had a positive start to their regular
season with a 3-0 win at No. 6 Mohawk on Saturday.
Alee Brecka and Kate Zawyrucha
both contributed 10 kills each in the victory.
St. Clair hosts No. 2 Nipissing and Canadore this weekend.
10. Sheridan Bruins
The Sheridan Bruins (1-1) split their trip to North Bay, Ont.,
defeating Canadore 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18) on Saturday
before falling to No. 2 Nipissing in straight sets on Sunday.
Melissa Cappelletti led Sheridan with a 25-point
effort against Canadore with 13 kills, nine serving aces and three
stuff blocks. Cappelletti produced five kills and two aces for
seven points against Nipissing.
Sheridan hosts No. 4 Fanshawe in its home opener on Wednesday
before visiting Redeemer on Friday.
