SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Sault College Cougars are once
again expanding their sport portfolio as they have elevated both
men's and women's indoor soccer from the club level to varsity
status. The Cougars will now compete in the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) for the upcoming 2012-2013 sport season
in indoor soccer; competing against 18 colleges and universities
throughout the province.
"Both the men's and women's squads have had great inaugural season
playing in their respective local leagues and the plan was to move
them to varsity status in the second year," states Athletic
Director Scott Gray. "With the new indoor facility
it will allow us to prepare our student-athletes for this next step
in the development of soccer at the college – with the goal
eventually to field outdoor teams as well."
The move will allow the Cougars to compete at the highest level in
the province and allow student athletes access to provincial awards
and athletic scholarships. Men's coach Howard Gray
commented, "This is an exciting time for soccer at the college
– this elevation in status will provide more student-athletes
the experience of playing at the provincial level."
Women's coach Terry Zeppa remarked, "This is
great for the sport of soccer in the city – developing the
program at Sault College will allow student-athletes the
opportunity to follow both their academic and athletic dreams here
locally."
With this addition the Sault College Cougars now field varsity
teams in the OCAA in men's and women's basketball, curling and
indoor soccer; while also having competitive club teams in men's
and women's hockey and cheerleading.
