TORONTO - This week's Ontario Colleges Athletic Association
(OCAA) women's soccer rankings saw the top teams jockey for
position on the eve of the upcoming playoffs.
1. Humber Hawks (Last Week - 1)
(Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Rank - 2)
The Humber Hawks (7-0-0) are a win away from perfection, having
secured first place in the OCAA West region.
Humber defeated No. 5 Sheridan 2-0 last Thursday.
Jaime-Lyn Baggs and Stefany
Santos both scored for the Hawks.
Humber visits Niagara in its regular season finale on Wednesday.
The Hawks will host the fourth-place team in the OCAA East region
in the quarter-finals this weekend.
2. Fanshawe Falcons (Last Week - 3)
(CCAA Rank - 5)
The Fanshawe Falcons (6-1-0) clinched second place in the OCAA
West region with an 8-0 home victory against St. Clair on
Wednesday, combined with Sheridan's loss to Humber.
Amy Wilson and Bailey Maxwell
came through with two goals each for Fanshawe in the win. The win
moved Fanshawe up one spot in the rankings.
Fanshawe hosts Redeemer on Wednesday in its regular season finale.
Fanshawe will host the third-place team in the OCAA East region in
the quarter-finals this weekend.
3. Algonquin Thunder (Last Week - 2)
(CCAA Rank - 8)
The Algonquin Thunder (5-0-1) were kept off the scoreboard for the
first time this season, battling No. 4 Seneca to a 0-0 draw on
Saturday.
Algonquin leads the OCAA East region with 27 goals this season,
led by Sydney Midwood's seven.
Despite the tie, Algonquin has clinched first place in the OCAA
East and will host the fourth place team in the OCAA West region in
the quarter-finals this weekend. Algonquin will first host La Cite
in a national capital region battle on Wednesday.
4. Seneca Sting (Last Week - 5)
The Seneca Sting (3-0-3) tied No. 3 Algonquin in a rematch of
last year's OCAA bronze medal game on Saturday.
Seneca has clinched a playoff spot and remains in the driver's
seat in the race for second place in the OCAA East. The Sting host
Fleming-Peterborough on Wednesday, and with a win, would clinch a
home quarter-final game to be played this weekend.
Playoff bound Durham (3-1-2) visits Loyalist on Wednesday, and can
clinch second place in the OCAA East with a win and Seneca tie or
loss.
5. Sheridan Bruins (Last Week - 4)
The Sheridan Bruins (4-2-1) squandered a chance to clinch a
playoff berth in the OCAA West region, getting blanked 2-0 at home
against No. 1 Humber and tying Redeemer 0-0 on the road on
Saturday.
Sheridan hosts Mohawk on Wednesday, with huge ramifications in the
OCAA West. Mohawk (4-3-0) trails Sheridan by one point, with the
winner finishing ahead of the losing team in the standings.
Conestoga (4-3-0) is also in the mix, as it visits Lambton on
Wednesday. Only two of Sheridan, Mohawk and Conestoga can make the
OCAA quarter-finals.
