BARRIE, Ont. - Humber College's Kelly Nyhof was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held at the Barrie Country Club on Thursday morning as part of the 2012 OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship.
BARRIE, Ont. - Humber College's Kelly Nyhof was
named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's
volleyball player of the year in a ceremony held at the Barrie
Country Club on Thursday morning as part of the 2012 OCAA Women's
Volleyball Championship.
Nyhof was among the OCAA leaders averaging 4.3 points and 3.08
kills per set. She totaled 213 points, 154 kills, 36 blocks and 23
aces for a Humber team that won the OCAA West regional crown with
an undefeated 18-0 record. The Hawks lost only six sets the entire
season. The Georgetown, Ont., native is also a Canadian Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA West
Division first-team all-star.
Former OCAA player of the year Shawna Metcalf
(Azilda, Ont.) of Cambrian was also named a CCAA all-Canadian. The
fourth-year right side earned the OCAA East scoring championship
averaging a league-best 4.6 points per match. She topped all OCAA
players averaging 3.90 kills per set. Metcalf is also an East
Division first-team all-star.
Dale Beausoleil of Cambrian is the OCAA East
coach of the year and its nominee for CCAA coach of the year. In
his 22nd season with the Golden Shield, Beausoleil's team flirted
with perfection, only losing in their final match of the regular
season to finish with a 19-1 record for the second straight season.
The Golden Shield also earned a second consecutive OCAA East
regional crown. Beausoleil saw his dynamic duo of Metcalf and
Kelsey Fielding (Sudbury, Ont.) named OCAA East
first-team all-stars.
Nipissing's Brittany Ardron (Lakefield, Ont.) was
named the OCAA rookie of the year to go along with her West
Division rookie award. The outside hitter led the Lakers with 131
kills, averaging 2.22 per set. She was also second on her team with
177 points. Ardron was also named an OCAA West first-team
all-star.
Jenny Richardson (Oshawa, Ont.) of Loyalist was
named the top rookie in the OCAA East region. The left side led the
Lancers with 229 points and 187 kills, while also contributing 34
aces and eight blocks. Richardson was also named an OCAA East
first-team all-star.
Joey Martins of Niagara was named OCAA West coach
of the year. In his first season at Niagara, Martins saw the
Knights finish above .500 for the first time in two seasons with a
10-8 record. It also marked the least number of losses Niagara
suffered in a season since its 10-5 record in 2007-08. Martins also
coached an OCAA West first-team all-star in Marieka
Ouimette (Spencerville, Ont.).
Liza Grenon (Sudbury, Ont.) of Canadore
headlines the other OCAA West first-team all-stars. This won't come
as a big surprise, given that Grenon averaged 4.6 points per set,
matching Metcalf's average to claim the OCAA West scoring
championship. Grenon also led the OCAA West averaging 3.69 kills
per set. Fanshawe's Kaitlyn Kelly (Waterloo,
Ont.), as well as Nina Carino (Scarborough, Ont.)
and Teresa George (Newtonville, Ont.) of Humber
were also named OCAA West first-team all-stars.
Rounding out the OCAA East first-team all-stars are Emily
Graham (Winnipeg) of Algonquin; Leanne
Jeffs (Stirling, Ont.) of Loyalist; Sarah
MacLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) of Trent along with Seneca's
Clare Weisser (Queensville, Ont.).
OCAA West second-team all-stars include Lucia
DeMarco (North Bay, Ont.), Megan Gilmore
(Cambridge, Ont.) and Kristi Town (Orillia, Ont.)
of Nipissing; Humber's Kris Dowling (Freelton,
Ont.); Lindsay Murray (Welland, Ont.) of Niagara;
Sam Singthong (Kitchener, Ont.) of Conestoga; and
Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, Ont.) of
Redeemer.
Algonquin's Jori Armishaw (Ottawa) and
Breann Wheeler (Owen Sound, Ont.); Cambrian's
Deanna Bedard (Sudbury, Ont.) and Jillian
Shell (Lively, Ont.); Georgian's Natalie
Buck (Keswick, Ont.) and Hannah Campbell
(Midland, Ont.); and Ashley Mulholland (Whitby,
Ont.) of Durham were named OCAA East second-team all-stars.
