OCAA EXECUTIVE ELECTIONS

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) has ushered in a new era with their newly elected executive. Jay Shewfelt of St. Clair College in Windsor accepted the position of OCAA President, making him the 22nd President in the Organization’s history. He will take over from Ron Fearon of Confederation College who will move to the Past Presidents roll.

Michele McConney of Georgian College has taken over the First Vice-President position, while Marlene Ford of Conestoga College assumes the roll of Vice-President of Finance.

Jim Bialek of Humber College will assume the duties as Vice-President of Marketing, while Ed Mark of George Brown College returns for a second term on the executive as Vice-President of Campus Recreation.

John Faragher of Lambton College returns to an executive roll after a hiatus and will oversee the OCAA’s structures and programs as Vice-President of Programs.

OCAA HALL OF FAME

Eighty-eight (88) new members of the OCAA Hall of Fame were formally inducted during the gala ceremony at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts in Windsor. Twelve previously inducted members were also honoured during the ceremony.

SPORT NEWS BITES

Basketball:

The OCAA Men’s and Women’s Championships will return to a final eight (8) format.

The OCAA Men’s Basketball Championships will be hosted by Fanshawe College in London, while the OCAA Women’s Basketball Championships will be hosted by Georgian College in Barrie.

Volleyball:

The OCAA Men’s and Women’s Championships will return to a final eight (8) format.

The OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship will be hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, while the Women’s Volleyball Championship will be hosted by Cambrian College in Sudbury.

Conestoga College has announced they will be returning to the OCAA for the 2010-11 men’s and women’s volleyball season. They will be running an exhibition schedule during the 2009-2010 season.

Rugby:

Rugby Canada will once again host the 2009 OCAA Division 1 Championships at Fletchers Fields. Division II rugby will again be hosted at the higher seed’s home.

The “Gilbert Match Ball” will be the official ball of the OCAA Rugby League and Championships.

The OCAA welcomed Trent University to the Division 1 Men’s Rugby league.

George Brown College will not participate in OCAA men’s rugby this season.

Soccer:

The OCAA will host the 2009 Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario.

This will also be the host site of the 2009 CCAA Women’s National Soccer Championship hosted by Humber College. The Men’s Soccer Championship will be hosted at Esther Shriner Stadium in Toronto by Seneca College.

Ontario will have two representatives at each Soccer Championship here in Toronto. This includes the CCAA men’s Championship hosts Seneca Sting and the women’s CCAA Championship host Humber Hawks soccer teams. The two OCAA provincial champions will also receive a bid to the championships.

Golf:

Cambrian College has joined the OCAA Golf League for the 2009-2010 season.

Conestoga has ceases their participation in OCAA Golf for the upcoming season.

The Niagara Knights will host the OCAA Golf Championship this season at the Lochness Links Golf and Country Club in Welland.

St. Clair College will host the CCAA Men’s and Women’s National Championships at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor.

X-Country Running:

St. Clair College will be hosting the OCAA X-Country Running Championships.

Badminton:

St. Clair College will be hosting the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Badminton Championships at their Leamington Campus.

Fastball:

Mohawk College will host the Women’s Fastball at the Mohawk Sports Park.

Indoor Soccer:

Conestoga College will once again host the men’s and women’s indoor soccer championships at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.

Curling:

The 2009-2010 Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships will be co-hosted by Algoma University and Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
