ROSTERS SET FOR OCAA BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS
TORONTO - Forty-eight student-athletes from a dozen schools have secured their spots at the upcoming Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) badminton championships, taking place Feb. 17-18 at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont.

secured their spots at the upcoming Ontario Colleges Athletic
Association (OCAA) badminton championships, taking place Feb. 17-18
at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont.
Georgian College won the overall team title at the OCAA East
regionals, hosted by Collège Boréal from Feb. 3-4.
Georgian is sending six athletes to provincials, led by men's
singles regional winner Guri Singh. The team of
Logan Dayus and Maggie Tremblay
finished second in mixed doubles, as did Nicole
Wilkins and Ziying Yang in women's
doubles. Georgian's Rebecca Trischler placed third
in women's singles, while the team of Brad McNeice
and Trevor Neville finished third in men's
doubles.
George Brown won the overall men's team title at the East
regionals, with the team of Dayvon Reid and
Mark Wong running the table to finish first in
men's doubles play. Ankush Chandwani placed second
in men's singles. George Brown's female contingent was also strong,
with Boryana Yankova sweeping the competition to
win the women's singles division. The duo of Kristine
Estabillo and Wilson Huynh placed third
in mixed doubles.
Host Boréal earned the overall women's team regional title,
led by Kalina Gelinas and Katie
Jodouin as the East's top women's doubles team. Teammate
Jenna Dupuis finished in second place in the
women's singles competition.
Adam D'Agostino and Kayla
Odorizzi finished in first place in mixed doubles, and
will represent Cambrian at provincials. Centennial will send a
three-man contingent to the OCAA championship, with Stephen
Kulanathan and Kevin Ronkiewicz combining
for a second-place finish in men's doubles. Teammate Ryan
Lue placed third in men's singles.
Humber College played host to the OCAA West regionals, also held
Feb. 3-4. The host Hawks made it a clean sweep earning all three
team titles. Humber will be sending nine athletes to provinicals,
including men's and women's singles regional winners Simon
Yip and Tracy Wong, respectively. Also
finishing first in regional play were Dustin
Mitchell and Johnny Truong in men's
doubles, and Alyssa Woon and Renee
Yip in women's doubles. Humber's Hadrian
Liu and Suzy Yan placed second in mixed
doubles, while Leroy Stanisclaus finished third in
men's singles.
Seneca's Sanjay Ashokkumar and Patricia
Lau were the only non-Humber athletes to finish in first
place in the West regional, winning the mixed doubles competition.
They will be joined at provincials by teammates Li-Ju
Chen and Carol Dela Cerna who placed
second in women's doubles, along with Jeffrey
Chow-Wah and David Georgievski for their
third place showing in men's doubles.
Four women will represent Redeemer at the OCAA championships,
including Katie Roth and Julie
Koopmans, who placed second and third, respectively, in
women's singles play. The team of Janelle Koopmans
and Katherine Harvey were ranked third in the West
region among women's doubles teams.
Four other schools will be represented at provinicals. Mohawk's
Chris Hong and Mohammad
Nazimuddin were runner-up in men's doubles play; likewise
for Conestoga's Mike Del Fante in men's singles
action; St. Clair's Luc Su and Karen
Williams finished third in mixed doubles; while Fanshawe's
Lisa Tyldesley and Danica Zwep
finished fourth in women's doubles.
The top three singles players and doubles teams from each regional
advance to provincials, with the exception of women's doubles. With
only two women's doubles teams competing in the East regionals, the
top four women's doubles teams from the West will attend
provincials.
The 2012 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) badminton
championships will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University in
Kamloops, B.C. from March 1-3.
