TORONTO - There will be some additional teams to six varsity
sports offered by Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) this
upcoming 2011-12 season, as officially determined at the OCAA
annual general meeting which took place last week at the Fairmont
Royal York in Toronto.
After a successful debut season in 2010-11, OCAA women’s
rugby will add three teams for 2011-12, more than any other sport.
Algonquin College, Conestoga College and Mohawk College will expand
the league from five to eight teams. Women’s rugby will also
change from an OCAA trial sport to official status this fall.
In addition to its women’s team, Algonquin will participate
in men’s rugby this upcoming season, joining Division II.
Humber College will participate in two additional varsity sports in
2011-12, including curling and women’s fastball. George Brown
College will also make its return to men’s volleyball after a
five-year hiatus.
Women’s basketball will also see expansion as both Lambton
College and Sault College hit the hardwood. Both schools will no
longer participate in OCAA women’s volleyball.
Fleming College (Lindsay) will not participate in OCAA badminton.
Canadore College, Niagara College and St. Lawrence College
(Kingston) will not participate in OCAA indoor soccer in
2011-12.
