LONDON, Ont. - The Mohawk men's volleyball team won the gold
medal in the 9th annual Overkill College Kickoff Tournament at
Fanshawe College in London October 1-2.
The Mountaineers did not lose a set all weekend. They
defeated the Fanshawe Alumni 25-23, 25-17. They then beat Georgian
25-17, 25-16 and Cambrian 25-19, 25-18.
In the semi finals Mohawk again downed Georgian, 25-18, 25-21.
They then took the championship match 25-17, 25-20 over host
Fanshawe.
Mohawk's Justin Scapinello was named the
tournament MVP and Ian Cameron and Ryan
dela Rosa were selected to the All-Star Team.
Mountaineers' head coach Matt Schnarr says it was
a great team effort and 10 of his 15 players saw three sets or more
of action. "Our depth showed this weekend that no matter who we put
on the floor can execute without our team missing a beat," said
Schnarr. "On the outside of the court we have a great collection of
attackers and couldn't be stopped. As we speed up our offense, our
setters Zac Schulz and Mark
Kaveckas continue to develop. We need to work the middle
of the court a bit more but in the finals we were very solid. A
great start to the year but a lot of work is still needed."
Meanwhile the Mohawk women wound up fifth in their pool. Seneca
beat the Mountaineers 27-25, 26-24 in their opener. Georgian needed
three sets to top Mohawk 25-20, 22-25, 15-9, then the Mountaineers
scored a 25-21, 25-23 decision over Cambrian.
In playoff action Sunday, Cambrian downed Mohawk 25-19, 25-23 and
St. Clair took three sets to beat Mountaineers 25-21, 16-25, 15-11,
to complete play for the Mohawk women.
Fanshawe won the women's gold medal, rallying to top Cambrian,
24-26, 25-17, 15-13 in the final.
