MOHAWK 3, SHERIDAN 0 (FINAL)
OAKVILLE, Ont - A third of the way through their OCAA West schedule, the only thing consistent about the performance of the Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team (10-8, 3-3 OCAA) has been inconsistency. And after winning their first road game at Niagara a week ago, they followed it up with their first home loss, falling in three straight to Mohawk.
"I thought the match was right there for the taking in set one, at 20-19, and then we really struggled and they finished us off," head coach Dave McAllister said. "After that it looked like we weren't ready to compete, our thoughts were with Frank and his family. Sometimes it's tough to wind it up and play with some passion and emotion. Tonight we just couldn't do that. Mohawk played very well, they hit balls hard and in. They served in, and dug balls and blocked balls and tonight wasn't our night. We didn't answer the bell and they were full value for their victory."
The first set was tight and competitive, but a few slip-ups in the late stages allowed Mohawk to pull away and pick up a 25-22 win.
While the final two sets started out close, again the Bruins couldn't match the intensity of their opposition and were closed out 25-16 and 25-12.
The Bruins were led by Jeremy Fantin (six kills, one block) and Alex Turkiewicz (six kills, one block) but overall produced just 28 points of total offence, while Mohawk racked up 51.
They now have a quick turnaround, travelling to Windsor on November 26 and McAllister says the team's approach is quite simple.
"It's a business trip," he said. "We're going to for a match against St. Clair and then after that we're going to study and some school work done and take care of that business. So it's a business trip, it's a game we need to have and that's my expectation."
Blue notes: The team and entire Bruin family was in mourning after the passing of captain Frank Pento's mother. The loss snapped a nine-match win streak for the Bruins on their home floor. Ironically, their last home loss was a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Mohawk last year.
