NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Humber Hawks defeated the Redeemer Royals today 3-0 during quarter-final action in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championship at Nipissing University.
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Humber Hawks defeated the Redeemer Royals today 3-0 during quarter-final action in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championship at Nipissing University.
The game represented a rematch of last year's OCAA gold medal game, which Humber won 3-0. Today's match (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) was controlled for the most part by Humber after a closely battled first set. Humber dominated the second set by taking the lead early. It was late in the set that Redeemer closed in on Humber's lead and brought the score within two points. At the end of the set, Humber persevered and won the set by five points. After giving up two sets, Redeemer tied up the third set 23-23, but Humber decided the game with two powerful hits by Terrel Bramwell (Mississauga, Ont.). Humber's Player of the Game went to Bramwell (nine digs, 21 kills) while Redeemer's Player of the Game was awarded to setter Jake Klassen who contributed six digs.
Humber (17-1) finished the regular season as the number one team in the CCAA and first in the OCAA West Conference.
Redeemer (10-8) finished the regular season in fifth place in the OCAA West.
Humber's Bramwell also received OCAA Men's Volleyball Player of the Year award at the OCAA Men's Volleyball League All-Star banquet this morning. Bramwell is also one of two CCAA Men's Volleyball All-Canadians from the OCAA.
Humber has won OCAA gold in the last two seasons.
Humber will play Mohawk tomorrow at 6 p.m. and Redeemer will play Seneca.
