MOHAWK 3, DURHAM 0 (FINAL)
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Mohawk Mountaineers defeated the Durham Lords today in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championships at Nipissing University.
It took Mohawk three convincing sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-18) to win the match and advance to the Bronze Medal game. Mohawk came to the court seeking a win this morning after yesterday's near upset of two-time defending OCAA champions Humber Hawks.
Before the game started, Mohawk's top player Justin Scapinello was issued a caution and shown the yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct and surrendered the first point of the match as a result.
In the first set Mohawk pulled ahead to a 15-10 lead after an evenly matched start and maintained a commanding lead, sometimes as wide as seven points, to win it. Mohawk again took a wide 19-10 lead in the second set after a close start. Durham's Player of the Game PJ Cornelius, with seven kills and three serving aces for 10 points in the match, responded shortly thereafter with two consecutive sideline serving aces. The third set saw Mohawk take the lead and dominate Durham with six point leads and a final stuff block by Mohawk's middle player Philip Youngblut to seal the match. Mohawk's Player of the Game went to fifth year left side hitter Ian Cameron who posted 12 kills and one serving ace for 13 points.
Mohawk will play in the Bronze Medal match at 3 p.m. today against the winner of the Algonquin Thunder and Seneca Sting match.
