NIPISSING 3, ALGONQUIN 0 (FINAL)
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Nipissing Lakers defeated the Algonquin Thunder in three sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) today during semi-final action in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championships at Nipissing University.
Nipissing controlled play for much of the first two sets, overwhelming Algonquin with their size and power. Algonquin, though, continued to battle, frequently coming within striking distance of Nipissing's lead but unable to surpass it.
Algonquin staked an early lead in the third set, but Nipissing continued to keep the score close, eventually tying the game at 19 and then taking a 22-21 lead that would not be relinquished.
OCAA West division all-star Frankie Edgecombe was named Player of the game for the Lakers, with nine kills and two stuff blocks for 11 points. Andre Leblanc, an OCAA West division all-star, had eight kills, two service aces and three stuff blocks for a 13-point night, while Adam Leblanc added eight kills and two stuff blocks for 10 points.
Joshua Harris, an OCAA East division all-star, was named player of the game for Algonquin, recording seven kills and one serving ace for eight points. Fellow OCAA East division all-star Alexandre Corsi Caya recorded 10 kills.
Nipissing will now play for the gold medal Saturday at 5 p.m., against the Humber Hawks, who beat the Mohawk Mountaineers earlier in the evening.
Algonquin will play in the bronze medal semi-finals against the Seneca Sting tomorrow at 11 a.m.
