ALGOMA 49, NIAGARA 37 (FINAL)
The Niagara College Knights women's basketball team dropped a 49-37 decision to the Algoma University Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.
"The bottom line is that they came to play and we didn't," said head coach Ron Lemon.
Algoma's shooting was ice cold in the early going, when they missed six straight shots, but Niagara failed to capitalize when they regained possession of the ball.
"We were just walking up the court, and we weren't playing any defence. It was just not a pretty game," Lemon added.
The Knights were tied 33-33 until the Thunderbirds went on a 16-4 run in the final quarter to pull away for the victory.
Alanna Arundell (Toronto) led the Knights in scoring with 15 points, 12 of them over the final half, and Shelby Johnston (Welland, Ont.) added 11 in the homecourt loss at the college's Athletic Centre at the main Welland campus.
The Knights (1-1) will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when they travel to Hamilton to take on the Mohawk College Mountaineers (2-0). Game time is 8 p.m.
On Saturday, the Knights will return home for a 6 p.m. game against the Fanshawe College Falcons. It is Niagara College Alumni Night, where all former Knights Basketball players are encouraged to come out and support the newest members of Knights Basketball.
