SHERIDAN 64, LOYALIST 45 (FINAL)
TORONTO – The Sheridan Bruins overcame a game where their shooting was not at its best on Day 2 of the 2012 adidas/VSP Sports Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Championship hosted by Seneca College.
The Bruins defeated the Loyalist Lancers, 64-45, using a combination of offensive depth and defensive prowess that the Lancers were unable to match. The Bruins still have the opportunity to contend for an OCAA bronze medal, should they win their next game on Saturday, March 3 at 9 a.m. versus the loser of tonight's match between the George Brown Huskies and Algonquin Thunder at 6 p.m. The Lancers have been eliminated from medal contention.
The Bruins' lethal combination of OCAA scoring champion, Nakia Arthur, of Brampton, Ont., and Desiree Tindugan, of Mississauga, Ont., continued their strong tournament play with dominant efforts against the Lancers. Arthur recorded 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and steals, in one of the more impressive statistical lines of the Championship thus far. Meanwhile, Tindugan scored a game-high 18 points and five boards in the victory, earning her adidas/VSP Sports Player of the Game honours for her squad.
OCAA All-Star and East Region Rookie of the Year, Jenni Thompson, of Belleville, Ont., led the way once again for the Lancers as she notched 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Team-mate and fifth-year veteran forward Dianne Bouder, of Cannifton, Ont., also produced a strong performance for Loyalist, with 12 points and two assists in earning the Player of the Game honours for the Lancers.
Both squads struggled from the field in the game, shooting less than 26 percent, however, the Bruins used a 22-point third quarter to seal the victory.
