ANGOU HEADLINES OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AWARDS
KINGSTON, Ont. - Fanshawe College's Chuot Angou (London) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year in a ceremony held in Kingston, Ont., on Wednesday evening as part of the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
KINGSTON, Ont. - Fanshawe College's Chuot Angou (London) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year in a ceremony held in Kingston, Ont., on Wednesday evening as part of the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
The fourth-year guard was the top scorer on Fanshawe during the 2018-19 regular season averaging 17.3 points per game, sixth among all OCAA players. Angou was third in three point shots made, shooting 46-of-123, or 37.4 per cent. Angou is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and headlines the OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Rita Sibo (Gatineau, Que.) of Algonquin is also an All-Canadian. The third-year player led her team in scoring averaging 14.1 points per game, and was third among eligible players in three-point shooting percentage shooting 28-of-67, or 41.8 per cent. Sibo is also an OCAA East Division First-Team All-Star.
The OCAA Rookie of the Year is Marie Stasiuk (Cobourg) of Durham. The forward led her team in scoring averaging 12.9 points per game while contributing 9.9 rebounds per contest. She cracked the OCAA Top 10 with 158 boards. Stasiuk is also the OCAA East Division Rookie of the Year, an OCAA East Division Second-Team All-Star and headlines the East Division All-Rookie Team.
Bill Carriere of Fanshawe is the OCAA West Division Coach of the Year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. Carriere led his Falcons to an OCAA West Division championship with a 19-1 record, including a league-best 15 game win streak to end the regular season.
The OCAA West Division Rookie of the Year is Keirsten Tomkins (Sarnia) of St. Clair. The guard averaged 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during the regular season. Tomkins headlines the East Division All-Rookie Team.
Jaime McLean of Algonquin is the OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. McLean led his Thunder to an OCAA East Division championship with a 15-2 record, including a 15-game win streak.
St. Clair's Jana Kucera (Chatham) is the OCAA League Scoring Champion. The second-year guard averaged 20.2 points per game, totalling 384 points. Along with being the OCAA West Division Scoring Champion, Kucera is an OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star.
Tianna Sullivan (Toronto) of George Brown is the OCAA East Division Scoring Champion. The fifth-year player averaged 17.5 points per game, totalling 298 points. Sullivan is also an OCAA East Division First-Team All-Star.
Defensive excellence was also honoured. Kylie Moyer (Prince Edward County) of St. Lawrence is the OCAA East Division Defensive Player of the Year. The second-year forward was near the top of rebounding in her division averaging 10.3 boards per game. She also contributed 32 steals and 16 blocks. Moyer was also named an OCAA East Division First-Team All-Star.
The OCAA West Division Defensive Player of the Year is Bridget Atkinson (Welland) of Niagara. The fourth-year guard led all OCAA players with 89 steals. She also contributed 148 rebounds and 10 blocks. Atkinson was also named an OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star.
Theresa Brown (Brampton) and Sydney Charvis (Mississauga) of Sheridan joined Angou, Kucera and Atkinson as OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Along with Sibo, Sullivan and Moyer, Emily Glendinning (Plattsville) of Durham and Taylor Allicock (Thornhill) of Seneca are OCAA East Division First-Team All-Stars.
The five student-athletes that make up the OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Stars are Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton), Jahnae Gyles (Mississauga) and Leticia Lopez (Toronto) of Humber; Christine Fleischer (Sarnia) of Lambton; and Sam Pocrnic (Oakville) of Mohawk.
Joining Stasiuk as OCAA East Division Second-Team All-Stars are Hadeza Ismaila (Orleans) of Algonquin; Cori Browne (Toronto) of Centennial; Zae Sellers (Minneapolis, Minn.) of George Brown; and Brittany Mason (Ottawa) of Loyalist.
Along with Stasiuk, members of the OCAA East Division All-Rookie Team are Arianna Gagnon (Timmons) and Ismaila of Algonquin; Chelsey Lees (Elliot Lake) of Georgian; and Kate Raso (Welland) of Loyalist.
Joining Tomkins on the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team are Ramla Abdalla (Waterloo) of Conestoga; Beth Minielly (London) of Mohawk; Alex Webb (Waterdown) of Redeemer; and Janella Viado (Milton) of U of T Mississauga.
