VAUGHAN, Ont. - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA)
indoor soccer season concludes this week, although with the record
high temperatures that have hit Southern Ontario, student-athletes
may opt to play outdoors.
The OCAA Men's and Women's Indoor Soccer Championships take place
Thursday and Friday at the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) Soccer
Centre in Vaughan, Ont.
Humber is the defending men's and women's champions, and having won
both outdoor titles last autumn, are looking for the OCAA soccer
sweep for the second straight season. The Humber men's team swept
the competition during regionals, earning a 4-0 record while
outscoring the competition 15-2. It was a similar story for its
women's team, as the Hawks sported a perfect 4-0 record while
outscoring their opponents 15-0.
Humber is one of six schools that qualified for both men's and
women's provincials, a list which includes Durham,
Fleming-Peterborough, George Brown, Seneca and Sheridan. The Durham
women's and Sheridan's men's teams went undefeated in regionals
earlier this month with identical 3-0-1 records. Both received OCAA
silver medals last year.
Other teams competing in the men's tournament include Georgian and
Conestoga, while on the women's side, Fanshawe and Redeemer will be
represented. Fanshawe won its regional tournament with a
unblemished 4-0 record. George Brown was the other men's regional
champion with a 2-0-2 mark.
Three regional tournaments in total were held for both men and
women earlier in March. The top two teams from each regional
automatically advance to the OCAA championships, while two wild
cards were selected using the OCAA tie breaking procedure.
The eight remaining men's and women's teams have been divided into
two pools. Each team will face the other three teams in its pool in
a round robin format on Thursday. The top two teams of each pool
advance to Friday's semifinals, followed by bronze and gold medal
matches.
