ST. LAWRENCE (K) 2, CENTENNIAL 1
The Centennial College women's varsity soccer program fought hard against the St. Lawrence Vikings, however, came up short losing 2-1 in their first on Campus home game at the newly constructed Progress Campus soccer pitch.
The game started with St. Lawrence on the attack and getting the better run of the game. The Lady Colts were just getting set as they turned the tide and had a few chances by striker Miriam El-Masri early in the game. Although opportunities did not materialize in finding the back of the net, the opportunities were presenting themselves. As the game shifted back and forth the Vikings were able to break the deadlock at the 24th minute of the game when Sydney Midwood got on the end of a shot across the net where the ball came out at the back post and she was there to slot it home. Chelsea Gordon continued to hold down the defence for Centennial keeping the Vikings from mounting too much pressure.
The Colts were not to be outdone marching right back down the pitch and applying pressure where they would see the equalizer three minutes later as Miriam went on a break and chipped the keeper to equalize the game. At the 35 minute mark the striker for St. Lawrence was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty shot. The ball was spotted and a goal was expected. That was not to be the case on this day. Colts keeper Maryem Serradilla-Sonmez got down across the net to make the save on the penalty as well as the impending rebound keeping St. Lawrence at bay. The half ended in an optimistic tie 1-1.
The second half saw more of the same see-saw action. At the 50th minute just after the start of the second half Vanessa Hutchinson from the Vikings connected on a cross to put the ball away. Score 2-1 for the Lady Vikings. That was how the game was to end up despite the action that was still to come.
Centennial did not give up and continued to push hard for the equalizer. A free kick by Nicole Campbell just sailed high of the net. Serradilla-Sonmez continued to contribute for the Colts by stopping two break-aways. El-Masri continued to cause trouble for the Vikings defence even when double and triple teamed. A break down the left at the 75th minute saw the St. Lawrence keeper Jessica Dodge make a good save on a shot near post. Late in the game El-Masri had a run down the right wing having beat two defenders and rung a shot off the outside of the near post. She was to be denied once again. The game ended moments later in St. Lawrence College's favour. It would have been nice to split the points, for the Lady Colts in their first ever on Campus home game; however on this day fate had it that the Vikings would be the victors. The Lady Colts are in action again this Wednesday against the Seneca Sting at the Newnham Campus.
