HUMBER 3, FANSHAWE 1 (FINAL)
ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Humber Hawks hosted the Fanshawe Falcons on Nov. 5. Both these teams have been known to create some great volleyball matches, and this match was no different. The Hawks did take the game 3 sets to 1, but it was not without a heavy push from the Falcons.
Kelly Nyhof, veteran middle for the Hawks, opened the game with a huge kill. This was only the start of a fantastic game for number 10. The Hawks were tied with Fanshawe at 14 early in the set. It was clear that both teams had brought their "A" game. But eventually, the Hawks broke away from the tight score and forced Fanshawe to a timeout as they lead 21-17. Nyhof started the set and ended the set with a huge point for Humber. She service aced to beat the Falcons 25-21.
The Hawks ran into trouble in the second set. Faulty passing and miscommunication mixed with a determined Fanshawe squad led to a dropped set by Humber. Coach Wilkins played around with his roster, allowing rookies Deborah Mitchell and Danielle Jones a chance to change the outcome for the Hawks. But the ladies continued to make crucial mistakes. Fanshawe took the second set 25-23.
Rookie Rebecca Sobie was a key player for the Hawks in the third sets. With consistent kills and consecutive serves, she helped the team overcome the second set loss. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to keep Coach Wilkins happy. Following a few calls that Coach Wilkins didn't agree with, he finally received a yellow card for unnecessary comments and a point was awarded to Fanshawe. By the third set, Nyhof already had 19 points for Humber and continued to dominate on the court. Fanshawe made a bit of a push near the end of the set but it wasn't enough. Laura Bye sealed the deal with the set point. The Hawks took the third set 25-20.
The little mistakes and issues Humber had in the previous sets were completely undetectable in the fourth and final set. Humber was a powerhouse and consistently played like one. Carley Uden, a rookie setter, controlled the game. Halfway through the set, the Hawks had a commanding lead of 20-13 over the Falcons. Most people expected Fanshawe to make a tight game out of the final set, but they couldn't handle Humber, and fell to our Hawks 25-13.
Carley Uden was named player of the game.
Kelly Nyhof led the team and the game with 21 points.
The Hawks are at home again next Saturday, Nov. 12 against Canadore at 12 PM.
