SHERIDAN 3, CONESTOGA 0 (FINAL)
OAKVILLE, Ont. - Two and a half months after they first came together as a squad, the Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (10-9, 4-4 OCAA) are starting to show signs of their true potential, playing their best match of the season in a 3-0 win over Conestoga that extends their win streak to three.
"I'm really, really pleased. We spent a couple of days doing some fundamental stuff and we executed it really well," head coach Patrick Krychowski said. "We had a good idea of what Conestoga was going to come in and try to do [and] we were able to counter-act that very efficiently. We didn't break at any point. The first set was kind of tight, but we were a little stronger mentally at the end. In the second and third sets, we just completely controlled the entire play. I can't be happier because we've been working towards this and it's come together nicely."
In the opening frame, the Lady Bruins found themselves in an early hole trailing 5-1 almost instantly. They were able to claw back immediately and upped their level of execution as the play went on and picked up a 26-24 win.
The next two sets were controlled fairly comfortably by the double-blue with 25-14 and 25-19 wins, the third set being capped by an ace from Melissa Cappelletti - who was the only player in double figures with 12 points (nine kills, three aces).
While nobody else had a double digit point total, the scoring was balanced and deep as Sheridan nearly doubled Conestoga in total offence 40-24.
While still on the early side of the holiday break, the match could prove to be a significant one in the playoff picture.
Heading into play, the Lady Bruins and Conestoga were tied for the fifth in the OCAA West with identical records - 3-4 overall with 11 set wins and 16 set losses.
The club has one match remaining - against division leading Humber on December 9 - and Krychowski says that while the team is preparing for that, the bigger picture is starting to emerge.
"We're going to have one more practice and then Humber and then another practice and a meeting. We're going to do some work through the break, we're going to give the girls some physical homework. I think the girls could use the break, I know I can, but I think we'll come back with a positive frame of mind. We've done well against the team we need to play well against."
