TRURO, N.S. - Lam Trinh of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Eagles has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton Coach of the Year.
Trinh received the award this evening at the 2019 CCAA Badminton National Championships banquet, hosted by Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro, N.S.
"Lam has taken a relatively new badminton program at UTM and made it respectable in a very short time," said Jordan Richey, CCAA Badminton Convenor. "The fact that he has qualified players to CCAA Nationals recently and has put UTM in a position to be able to host the CCAA National Championships next season is a testament to Lam's abilities as a program leader and coach."
Trinh serves as a mentor to his student-athletes and continues to build team and partnership chemistry at UTM.
This season, seven out of 10 student-athletes at UTM qualified for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Championships, which were hosted by the Eagles in Mississauga. OCAA Women's Badminton Player of the Year Rachel Wong earned a silver medal at provincials. The Eagles also had duos in Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
Trinh guided UTM to second-place finishes in both the Men's and Women's team competitions at the OCAA West Regionals.
UTM, which joined the OCAA in 2014, will host the 2020 CCAA Badminton National Championships in Mississauga.
CCAA Coach of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
