ETOBICOKE, Ont. - For the fourth consecutive season, the St. Clair Saints reign supreme in OCAA men's baseball after the powerhouse from Southern Ontario defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 7-4 in the gold medal game.
The Falcons came into the game fresh off a morning win over the host Humber Hawks and needed to beat St. Clair in two straight games to claim their first ever provincial championship. Standing in their way was 2015 OCAA Pitcher of the Year Shane Courtney, who finished the regular season 4-0 with an ERA of 1.38.
It was the Saints who scored first when Kevin Dion hit an RBI double that scored Miguel Cienfuegos. Then, with two out, Crannel Jerald hit a double down the line that would score Dion and Casey Boutette.
The Falcons countered in the top half of the third inning when Travis Helps hit a single to left field. Hayden Regnier scored on the hit with Brady Tompros trailing close behind. From left field, Dion threw a strike home to prevent Tompros from scoring, limiting the damage for the Saints.
Trailing 4-1 to begin the fifth inning, the Falcons began to chip away at St. Clair's lead. The Falcons cut the lead to one, forcing Courtney to leave game. With the bases loaded and one out, the Saints brought Cienfuegos in to pitch. After a passed ball tied the game, Cienfuegos was able to strike out Player of the Year Quinton Twohey and Bryan Hames to end the inning.
In the home half of the fifth, the Saints were able to retake the lead after a bases loaded walk to Boutette scored Roberto Duncan.
The Saints added two more in the sixth to win the game 7-4 to secure their fourth OCAA championship. St. Clair is now 12-0 all-time in OCAA post-season play.
Regnier was named Player of the Game for Fanshawe and Jerald was named Player of the Game for St. Clair.
