Hamilton, Ontario holds a special place in Brad Jacobs heart.
Three years ago, the curler from Sault Ste. Marie was standing on
the ice at Glendale Golf and Curling Club in Hamilton, hoisting
Algoma University College’s first and only OCAA Championship
title. This weekend the 21 year-old will return to the memorable
city to compete on one of the grandest stages in his young career,
the prestigious Tim Hortons Brier.
Jacobs, the youngest competitor in the Brier tournament, will
attempt to duplicate his OCAA Championship performance that saw his
Algoma team of Andrew Silk, Scott Seabrook, Matt Seabrook and Coach
Ross Boston, go 6-0 in round robin competition enroute to the OCAA
Championship title. The Northern Ontario team will open the
tournament against Prince Edward Island at 7:00 pm on Saturday,
March 3.
The geography major, who Skipped the Thunderbird’s team in
2004 as well as his Northern Ontario team at the 2005 Kärcher
Canadian Juniors (8-4 in Fredericton), will play third for the team
from Northern Ontario. He will, however, be trusted to throw Skip
stones on the team led by his Uncle and team Skip Al Harnden, who
is making his return to the Brier after 17 years. Also joining the
family pairing will be Second: Dustin (Dusty) Jakomait and Lead:
Rob Thomas.
On behalf of the OCAA and all of its affiliate schools, we wish
Brad Jacobs and his Northern Ontario team the best of luck in the
Tim Hortons Brier Championship.
