DURHAM 17, MOHAWK 9
The Mohawk women's fastball team is still looking for its first win of the OCAA season. The Mountaineers ran into a juggernaut called the Durham Lords, losing 17-9 and 20-1 at Mohawk Sports Park Thursday (Sep. 20).
Mohawk was certainly hitting the ball in the opener with Stephanie Duffin, Nicole Leitch and Stephanie Accomando all hitting triples, and the Mountaineers were down only 11-9 going to the 7th inning when Durham cashed in six runs.
It was yet another example of Mohawk giving up a big inning late.
But in game two, Durham came flying out of the gate, scoring seven runs in the first inning and adding eight more in the fourth. The mercy rule kicked in the next frame.
Mohawk pitcherJessica Denstedt was charged with losses in both games.
It's hard to find a positive note in the doubleheader loss, but Mountaineer head coach Brian Weller praised the outfielders. "The outfield played well, they really did," said Weller. "They were being peppered like crazy (by the Lords batters), but they tracked down balls and made some amazing catches, in both games."
Durham upped its record to 4-0, while Mohawk fell to 0-5.
