DURHAM 11, FANSHAWE 0
LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe Falcons women's softball team had a busy week, finishing with a record of 1-5. The Falcons sit in fourth place in the OCAA softball standings.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Fanshawe had a tough set of games on the road versus the Conestoga Condors (4-1), losing 14-4 and 14-0. Fanshawe's Ashley Long did manage to finish the trip 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
On Saturday, Fanshawe hosted their home opener versus the Durham Lords (2-2). The Lords won both games with scores of 4-2 and 11-0. Carlene Clapperton finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBI.
On Sunday, the OCAA leading Humber Hawks (5-2) came to town. In the first game, Fanshawe was down 4-0 in the sixth inning before Kady Hawkins hit a triple into right field to spark a comeback. Fanshawe followed her triple up with four consecutive singles and the Falcons tied the game.
After a scoreless seventh, the game went to extra innings, where Fanshawe scored the go-ahead run in dramatic fashion with a collision at home plate.
In the second game, Fanshawe found themselves down early again but couldn't come all the way back, losing 5-3. Hawkins went 5-for-7 at the plate in the two games versus Humber.
The Falcons head to Windsor, Ont., on Tuesday to face the St. Clair Saints (5-2). The Saints are tied with Humber for the best record in the OCAA.

LONDON, Ont. - The Durham College women's softball team opened up their regular season with a pair of road victories over Fanshawe College on Saturday afternoon. The Lords doubled up Fanshawe 4-2 in game one and followed that up with an 11-0 shutout in game two.
After a two hour rain delay to start the day, it took Durham a couple of innings to heat up as they trailed 1-0 after two. In the top of the third inning, the Lords sent eight batters to the plate and managed to score four runs to take a commanding lead.
Fanshawe would manage to score one more run in the fifth inning, but the combination of Lydia Kalbfleisch (Moorefield, Ont.) and Danielle Crosby (Whitby, Ont.) on the mound would enable the team to cruise to victory. Kalbfleisch earned the win pitching five innings, allowing two earned runs and 11 hits while striking out six. Crosby had a two-inning save allowing only one Fanshawe hit.
Katrina Gammie (Guelph, Ont.) had a big game at the plate going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) and Caleigh Coles (Duncan, B.C.) also had two hits apiece.
In game two, Lords pitchers dominated Fanshawe hitters as they held the Falcons to just one hit. Sam MacCallum (Whitby, Ont.) pitched six innings and allowed only two base runners, doing a great job of keeping the ball in play and allowing the Lords defence to record outs. Crosby would pitch a perfect seventh inning to earn her second save of the day.
Gammie would have her second multi-hit game as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Left fielder Courtney Hobbs (Oshawa, Ont.) also went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.) and Coles combined for four RBI and three runs scored.
Durham will finish off their weekend road trip in Windsor on Sunday as they take on St. Clair. The Saints are 2-2 to start the season, after splitting doubleheaders with Seneca and Conestoga.
