MOHAWK 10, FANSHAWE 6

The Mohawk women's softball team divided decisions with the Fanshawe Falcons in OCAA action at London Friday (Sept. 22). The Mountaineers won the opener 10-6, then dropped the nightcap 6-4.

In game one, Mohawk exploded for six runs in the first inning, then tacked on two runs in the second frame and one more in the third. The Falcons scored twice in the first inning and got four in the fifth, but that was the end of their scoring.  

Shelby Hayward had three RBIs to pace the Mountaineers' offence. Courtney Cole and Shanien O'Neill drove in two apiece and Meagan Byers had one RBI.

Ali Bergman had two RBI for Fanshawe, after going 4-for-4.

Aimee Leduc went the route for Mohawk, picking up the win, to improve her record to 3-6. Shianne Martin started and lost for Fanshawe to fall to 1-4.

In game two, the Falcons scored five times in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. They then had to hold on as Mohawk's rally with one run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh, fell short.

Samantha Fuller led the home side with two RBI.

O'Neill drove in two runs for the Mountaineers, while Hayward and MacKenzie Phillpot each went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Jacey Lochert, who relieved starter Bergman after four innings, picked up the win to go to 2-2. 

Andie Bomberry went all the way for Mohawk, losing her first decision of the season.

Despite the defeat in game two, head coach Todd Bannister said he and his assistants are very pleased with the effort of the players. "The last four games have been very close. We are working hard to field a competitive team each game," Bannister said.

Mohawk and Fanshawe were both 3-7 following the twin bill.

The Mountaineers will be home at Mohawk Sports Park to Humber Sunday (Sept. 24), at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Fanshawe plays host to Seneca Sunday at 1:00 pm and 3 pm at Stronach Park.
