TORONTO - The following have been named Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) Teams of the Week for the period ending
Sunday, March 4.
Mohawk Men's Basketball
The Mohawk Mountaineers did something that has not been done since
Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Prime Minister. Mohawk won its first
OCAA men's basketball championship since 1972, defeating three-time
defending champion Humber 89-86 in the tournament finale. Mohawk's
all-Canadian guard Aminu Bello (Hamilton, Ont.)
was named player of the game, scoring 33 points. Mohawk goes on to
represent the OCAA at nationals, taking place in Truro, N.S. from
March 15-17.
Algonquin Women's Basketball
The Algonquin Thunder did something that they did only last year,
repeating as OCAA women's basketball champions. It wasn't easy,
however, as Algonquin needed double overtime to defeat divisional
rival Seneca 62-57 in the tournament finale. With their three wins
at the tournament, the Thunder extended their OCAA win streak to 18
games. Both Algonquin and Seneca both go on to represent OCAA at
nationals, taking place in Lethbridge, Alta. from March 15-17.
