NIPISSING 2011-12 ATHLETIC AWARDS

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Volleyball players Scott Coulthard and Lucia DeMarco were named the 2011-12 Nipissing University Athletes of the Year as the Lakers handed out its hardware at the 19th Annual Varsity Athletic Banquet.
 
Coulthard (Wingham, Ont.), a third-year 6-foot-3 left side hitter, was named the Al Carfagnini Male Athlete of the Year for co-captaining his team to record breaking heights. The Lakers men's volleyball team set many new bench marks including a 17-1 regular season record and capturing an OCAA provincial silver medal the first such medal in the men's program history. The men were also ranked in the country's Top 10 for most of the season climbing as high as No. 2 in the nation. Coulthard averaged 2.8 points per game, was named an OCAA first-team all-star, an OCAA championship all-star and represented Nipissing University at the OCAA all-star game.
 
DeMarco (North Bay, Ont.) was named the Jack and Mary Ann Jones Female Athlete of the Year. DeMarco, a 5-foot-11 fourth-year middle blocker, co-captained the Lady Lakers to a 12-4 regular season record while capturing an OCAA bronze medal. This was the seventh consecutive OCAA medal for the Lady Lakers. DeMarco was among the Top 5 in the OCAA scoring race as she averaged 3.5 points per game and was named an OCAA second-team all-star.
