CORNWALL, Ont. - St. Lawrence College Athletics & Recreation
honoured its student athletes at a special ceremony at the Ramada
Inn & Conference Centre on Wednesday, April 4 and Sarah
Tyrrell and Mathew Milberry took home two
of the biggest awards.
Tyrrell, a nursing student from Vancouver, B.C. took home the
Female Athlete of the Year award. She was an exceptional player on
the Sharks women's indoor soccer team; a forward who was counted on
to provide both scoring and veteran leadership. Her efforts helped
the Sharks remain as one of the most competitive teams in the
Ontario Colleges Athletic Association in 2011-2012. Tyrrell
previously played for the Concordia University Stingers varsity
soccer team and her teammates benefitted from the experience she
brought to the club.
Milberry, a business student from Halifax, N.S., was named the
Male Athlete of the Year. He was one of the top scorers on the
Sharks men's hockey team, which qualified for the Challenge Cup
provincial championship tournament for the second straight year.
Milberry also brought a veteran presence to the Sharks, as he
previously played for the Royal Military College Paladins men's
hockey team.
The Student Union Academic and Athletic Excellence Awards went to
Adam Home-Cutler and Carolina
Kavan. The award is presented to the male and female
athlete at the school with the highest grade point average, while
competing in at least one sport. Home-Cutler, a nursing student
from Ottawa, was a member of the Sharks cross country and men's
indoor soccer teams. Kavan, a business student originally from
Caracas, Venezuela, was a member of the Sharks women's indoor
soccer team.
The Brown's Fine Food Services Inc. Award went to
Christina Russell. The award recognizes a student
who has contributed to improving the quality of student life on
campus, while maintaining good grades.
The awards banquet came at the end of a successful season for SLC
Cornwall Athletics, which saw its women's hockey team win three
tournaments and its men's hockey team qualify for the provincial
championship tournament, among other highlights.
"This was an incredible year for SLC Athletics," said
Jacquie Cartwright, the Athletic and Student Life
Officer for St. Lawrence College Cornwall. "Matt, Sarah, Adam,
Carolina and Christina represent just a few of the people who have
contributed to the success of our athletic programs in
2011-2012."
