GEORGIAN 2011-12 ATHLETIC AWARDS
Shane Rowe and Jasmine Paton named Georgian's athletes of the year.
Male Athlete of the Year - Cloutier Cup
Shane Rowe - Basketball
Rowe, a 6-foot-2 forward majoring in Business, enjoyed an
outstanding season leading the men's basketball team to its first
appearance at the OCAA Provincials since 2006. The Barrie native
earned OCAA East first-team all-star honours while averaging double
figures in both points (22.6) and rebounds (14.6), leading the
country in rebounding and finishing sixth in scoring. At the OCAA
Provincials he was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 24
points and 11.6 rebounds in three games, helping his team to a
quarter-final win over the Sheridan Bruins. Rowe was an all-star at
the George Brown Invitational in January and was named OCAA male
basketball athlete of the week on November 29.
Female Athlete of the Year - Greer Trophy
Jasmine Paton - Golf
Paton was a member of the women's golf team that won a silver
medal at the CCAA National Championships held in Prince Edward
Island. She also picked up a silver medal in the team competition
at the OCAA Provincial Championships. Individually the Ottawa
resident earned her second consecutive bronze medal at the OCAA
Championships and placed 10th at Nationals. The Professional Golf
Management student also finished in third place at the Niagara
Invitational in September.
Rookie of the Year Award
Female: Mackenzie Roy - Volleyball
Roy, a 5-foot-7 setter from Barrie, moved into the starting
line-up in late November and helped her team earn a berth to the
OCAA Provincial Championships. The Grizzlies were 10-2 with her in
the starting line-up and finished the season in third place with a
14-6 record. The Police Foundations student led her team in service
aces with 42, including a season-high seven against George
Brown.
Male: Steve Sasseville - Rugby
Sasseville, a Police Foundations student from Orillia, is an
intense competitor when attacking with the ball or defending. The
winger was named OCAA rookie of the year and earned a spot on the
OCAA all-star team. His consistent ability to tackle under
pressure, often against larger opponents, has gained him respect
and praise from his teammates and opponents.
Howard/Belcourt Award
Mike Hammond - Men's Volleyball
The Howard/Belcourt Award is presented to an athlete that displays
outstanding sportsmanship, dedication, commitment, attitude and
leadership.
Hammond, a fifth-year student from Barrie, helped to lead the
men's volleyball team to a turnaround season. After finishing 5-13
last year, the Grizzlies earned a playoff berth with a 13-7
campaign as Hammond used his presence and leadership skills on the
practice and game court to help inspire and motivate his young
teammates. The Fine Arts student was named a first-team OCAA East
all-star, finishing third in the OCAA in scoring at 4.5 points per
game.
McKillican Trophy
Jordan Riley - Student Athletic Association
The McKillican Trophy was established by Dr. Donald McKillican a
former Student Service Director at Georgian College. The
award is for outstanding contribution to the Athletic Department by
a student.
Riley was an invaluable member of the Student Athletic
Association, serving as the marketing coordinator, promoting
Georgian athletics on and off-campus. He also performed as
"Growler", the Georgian Grizzly mascot, helping to increase school
spirit at campus and community events throughout the year. In
addition, the Hospitality and Tourism student worked as a customer
service representative and a climbing wall employee at the Georgian
Athletic and Fitness Centre.

OCAA All-Academic Award
The OCAA All-Academic Award is for students who have achieved
combined excellence in academics and athletics. At Georgian,
students must achieve an average of 80% or higher in the classroom
and be a member of one of our 13 varsity teams.
