FANSHAWE COLLEGE 2012-13 ATHLETIC AWARDS
Clint Smith (Men's Cross County) and Jordan Ariss (Women's Curling) are Fanshawe College's Athletes of the Year in 2012-13.
Fanshawe College Female Athlete of the Year
Jordan Ariss
Jordan lives, breathes and eats the sport of curling. This year, Jordan was given the role of skip on the women's curling team. There is a tremendous amount of pressure and responsibility in throwing the last rocks and dictating the strategy for a curling team. This is especially true for a team that is trying to defend a National Championship. Jordan assumed this role and led by example on and off the ice.
Jordan honed her skills as skip during league games at the Highland Curling Club and through countless hours of practice and studying the sport of curling. At the OCAA Provincial Championships, Jordan was named a First-Team All Star and led the Falcons to a bronze medal performance. At the CCAA National Championships, Jordan was once again selected as an All-Star and led the Falcons to National gold, with a 7-1 tournament record.
Jordan also excels in the classroom. She is also the recipient of the OCAA All-Academic and SIRC Academic All-Canadian Awards while maintaining a 4.2 GPA in the Office Administration program. She is well deserving of the Female Athlete of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
Fanshawe College Male Athlete of the Year
Clint Smith
After an amazing regular season including individual gold medal performances at the St. Lawrence and Seneca Invitational's, Clint led the men's cross country team to an OCAA team gold and provincial championship. He also won the individual gold with a time of 24:53. The team then went to the CCAA National Championships in St. Lambert, Que., where Clint again led the charge, taking home individual silver and helping Fanshawe to win the team national championship. This is the second time in the last three years where Clint has been the lead runner for a national championship team from Fanshawe.
Clint also excelled in the classroom. Clint is enrolled in the Business program and maintains a 3.93 GPA. He is the recipient of the OCAA All-Academic and SIRC Academic All-Canadian Awards.
Clint, who is both the team captain and MVP, always is looking to help his fellow teammates. His coaches have said that he is always first to support and congratulate others. Clint has had an amazing year both on the course and in the classroom and is well deserving of the Male Athlete of the Year Award.
Les Zoltai Award
Nicole Carriere
Nicole has taken on the challenge of being not only a full-time student and a part-time employee with the Athletics department, but also a key member of the Women's Basketball, Women's Outdoor and Women's Indoor Soccer teams. Enrolled in the Recreation and Leisure program, Nicole maintains a 4.2 GPA and is on the dean's honour role.
Over the four seasons that Nicole has been a part of Fanshawe, she has been a team captain, has received eight OCAA and CCAA medals, as well as been the recipient of the Leadership in Training and Jim Matchett Awards.
Nicole's dedication to Fanshawe Athletics and ability to juggle a very busy schedule makes Nicole an excellent recipient of the Les Zoltai Award.
Jim Matchett Memorial Scholarship
Clint Smith
Clint is most known for his great accomplishments as a cross country runner where, as the team captain, Clint led the Falcons to a second national championship in the past three seasons. What is perhaps not known is that he has excelled in many aspects of Fanshawe College.
Clint has been an employee of the Fanshawe Athletics department for the past two years as an Athletic Assistant. He also has helped the Student Athletic Program by volunteering to work multiple college open houses to promote our program.
Clint has also excelled in the classroom where he is currently enrolled in the Business program and maintains a fantastic GPA of 3.93. He is the recipient of the OCAA All-Academic and SIRC Academic All-Canadian Awards this year.
