MOHAWK COLLEGE 2012-13 ATHLETIC AWARDS
Manny Campbell (Men's Basketball), Megan Campbell (Women's Basketball) and Nicole Leitch (Women's Fastball) are named Mohawk College's top athletes of 2012-13.
Megan Campbell epitomizes the college ideal of
a true student-athlete. Campbell, of Caledonia, helped the Mohawk
women's basketball team to the Ontario Colleges Athletic
Association playoffs and averaged 91 per cent in the Recreation and
Leisure Services course. Her efforts earned her the highest honour
in Mohawk Athletics, the Dr. Sam Mitminger Award, which goes to the
graduating player who has achieved consistent academic and athletic
excellence. The award was presented at Mohawk's 46th annual
Athletic Banquet at Michelangelo Banquet Hall, April 6.
In the 2012-13 season, Campbell averaged 3.8 points per game,
recorded 28 offensive and 74 defensive rebounds, had 11 assists, 16
blocked shots and 12 steals, for the Mountaineers, who were 10-8 in
the regular season.
The Wes Hicks Outstanding Male Athlete honour went to All-Canadian
guard Manny Campbell, who led the Mountaineer men
to a silver medal at the OCAA Men's Basketball Championship. The
Burlington native averaged 13.7 points per game, had 13 offensive
and 63 defensive rebounds, 57 steals, 69 assists and three blocked
shots as Mohawk went 16-4 in the regular campaign. Campbell was an
OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star to go with his national
award.
Nicole Leitch of the women's fastball team was
selected the Outstanding Female Athlete. The women's fastball team
had a tough season on the diamond, but one-third of their losses
were by only one run and Leitch, from Erin, was a model of
consistency at the plate and on the field. She played all 15 games,
had 17 hits and scored 13 times. She also drove in 10 runs. Leitch
led the Mountaineers with a solid batting average of .368, putting
her in a very respectable 16th place in the OCAA, en route to being
named a League All-Star.
Other Major Mohawk Varsity Awards:
Lacey Wolters, of Kingsville, who averaged 9.1
points per game and hauled down a total of 139 rebounds for the
women's basketball squad was named the top Female Freshman Athlete.
Wolters made the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team.
The Male Freshman Athlete honour was won by volleyball star
Eric Danecke of Kitchener, who had 110 kills, 32
stuff blocks and 12 service aces. He also had 36 defensive digs and
helped Mohawk win the OCAA silver medal.
The All-Round Male Athlete Award, for excellence in more than one
varsity sport, went to Luc Seguin of Mississauga,
who was 29th in the OCAA Cross Country Championships and 65th in
the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association event. Seguin was also
a member of the men's curling rink at the OCAA Championships.

Mohawk also presented varsity coaches awards, which are presented

Mohawk's Department of Athletics and Recreation Award was taken by Stephanie Accomando. The award recognizes outstanding participation in both the varsity and campus recreation programs. Accomando was involved in co-ed frisbee, co-ed volleyball and was a member of the extramural hockey team. Her varsity participation was with the women's fastball team, where the Recreation and Leisure Services student played in 15 games, had five hits and scored nine runs and was named an OCAA All-Star.
The Hap Holman Business Award, which recognizes outstanding participation in varsity athletics and academic excellence in a business program, went to cross country runner John Miles. He was a team member for two years and was 32nd at the OCAA championship in a field of 102 runners and 78th at the CCAA championships where 137 runners took to the course. He shaved off nearly three minutes from his best result in 2011-12. Over three semesters at Mohawk College, he has maintained an average of 83 percent.
The Barb Moore Spirit of Athletics Award goes to a student involved in athletics as a non-participant and who demonstrates dedication in support of athletics. Patrick Tang attended almost every home basketball and volleyball game with his horn, sign and even body painted himself on occasion. He also attended a number of rugby games and our tailgate function and in support of the Mountaineers he travelled to the OCAA volleyball championships at Sheridan College. During Mohawk's last home volleyball game against Fanshawe, Tang stood up during a time out and started a dance off with a Fanshawe fan. The campus recreation participant played coed volleyball, extramural volleyball, football, and basketball.
CCAA Academic All-Canadian
Women's soccer player Jody Hagen received a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Academic All-Canadian Award, which goes to athletes who must attain academic honours in addition to athletic success.
