BRAMPTON, Ont. - For the first time in several decades, there were eight teams represented at the 44th annual Sheridan Bruins Athletic Banquet as the men's and women's rugby teams joined their siblings from the basketball, soccer and volleyball teams.
"This is always a very special evening," Sheridan athletic
director Jim Flack said. "The way we started this
night off, seeing just a huge group of student-athletes walk up to
the stage as OCAA All-Academic winners, was tremendous. All of them
have competed so hard on their respective fields and courts, and I
take great joy in seeing that they have studied just as a hard. The
determination of these individuals is what truly makes collegiate
athletics so alluring. We have every confidence that they will stay
on a track towards graduating and, with a Sheridan education behind
them, will go into the work world and be extremely
successfully."
Sarah Cuoto, the captain of the women's soccer
team, was a big winner on the evening, taking home the crown jewel
of the Sheridan trophy case - the Academic/Athletic Excellence
Award - while also being named the Female Athlete of the Year and
picking up her CCAA Academic All-Canadian and OCAA All-Academic
Awards.
Anchoring the Bruin back line, Cuoto was a key component in
holding opponents to just three goals during the eight game
schedule and winning the West Division title for the first
time.
For her efforts, she was named an OCAA West all-star as well as
the OCAA defensive player of the year.
On the heels of their 10th OCAA title, men's basketball player
Michael Selkridge was named the Male Athlete of
the Year.
Selkridge led the Bruins in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per
game - while connecting on 47.4 per cent of his attempts from the
floor - a mark that was good for fourth in the conference, and
second in the West Division.
He was named an OCAA First-Team West Division All-Star during the
regular season and rounded it out by being named to the all-star
teams at the OCAA Championship and CCAA Championship.
Men's soccer player Brandon McKinlay was the
recipient of the Rob Till Leadership award, handed out to the
student-athlete who shows tremendous dedication to their team and
the greater Sheridan community.
