KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College (SLC) Athletics &
Recreation department honoured its student-athletes from the
Kingston campus at their annual awards ceremony at the Four Points
by Sheraton on Thursday, April 11.
The athletics banquet is the biggest event of the year, as the
Athletics staff dedicates several hours in preparation to honor the
great achievements of the SLC-Kingston student-athletes. Once
again, Vikings athletes had another very successful season; cross
country runner Richelle Moore qualified for
back-to-back national championship appearances and won gold at the
Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial
championships; the golf team won the SLC Tri-Campus Cup in-addition
to having a strong finish at the OCAA provincial championships; the
women's rugby and soccer teams finished a great regular season and
qualified for playoff spots; men's rugby and soccer teams played a
great season and finished just short of a playoff spot; the men's
basketball team would record crucial wins late in the season to
advance to the playoffs; and the women's basketball team
experienced an incredible turnaround season, finishing fourth
overall in Ontario, after going winless in 2011-12.
Adam Wood (men's soccer) and Brooke Van
Guyze (women's rugby) were this year's masters of
ceremony. The two did a tremendous job moving the night along and
entertaining the crowd. The two biggest awards (Female and Male
Athlete of the Year) were presented at the end of the night, to two
well deserving basketball players, Lacey Knox and
Terence Thomas.
Lacey is a one-of-a-kind team captain. She is an absolute force in
her sport and embodies the definition of a leader, supporting her
teammates, and buying into her coach's system. She joined the team
one year after the program experienced a very challenging 2011-12
season, and had zero expectations to do well in 2012-13. Lacey took
control of the season, and led her team to the OCAA provincial
championship, finishing fourth overall in Ontario. In addition to
being part of the team's amazing success and turnaround, she was
recognized by the OCAA for her on-court dominance this season,
winning five awards at the OCAA women's basketball banquet. She was
awarded OCAA East Division All-Star, OCAA East Division Scoring
Champion (20.3 points per game), OCAA League Scoring Champion (365
points total), OCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year, and
Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) All-Canadian.
Despite all of her team and individual success, she remains
incredibly humble. She is currently involved in speaking with
potential new players, and is looking to build on her first year
success.
Being one of few returning players, team veteran Thomas has been a
part of the Vikings men's basketball program for four years and has
consistently climbed the ranks, becoming the team's captain in
2012-13. He has been a tremendous role model for the younger
players, as he shows strict dedication to the program, through his
sportsmanship, and fair play. Despite consistently leading the team
in points, while playing several minutes each game, he is one of
the first players to arrive for practice and last to leave as he is
always looking to improve on his game. His dedication is shown
through his stats, leading the Vikings in points (16.6 points per
game), winning an OCAA All-Star award, in addition to being named
SLC Athlete of the Month in November. Terence is also heavily
involved in student life events, and helps co-ordinate the
intramural basketball program. He is currently working with new
recruits whom are joining the team next season, and is preparing to
help coach a younger generation of potential Vikings basketball
players at the summer basketball camp.
The OCAA recognizes the top athletes, coaches, and volunteers at
the end of each season, awarding them with several awards. This

When combined with the Cornwall, Brockville, and Kingston
campuses, St. Lawrence College has an incredible 53 All-Academic
student-athletes. That is the highest amount out of all
participating OCAA Ontario Colleges. "Having the highest amount of
all-academic athletes out of all Ontario Colleges is a real
statement about the quality and work ethic of the student-athletes
that are enrolled at St. Lawrence College. I could not be more
proud of this group of students," said SLC Athletics Director
Herb Steacy.
The CCAA presents a similar award to athletes that are successful
not only in their sport, but also in the classroom. These athletes
have earned all-star recognition in the OCAA, and have also
achieved a GPA over 3.5 for the entire school year. Cross-country
runner Richelle Moore received this award for the third consecutive
year. Vikings basketball player, Lacey Knox, also received a CCAA
Academic All-Canadian Award. A banner will be raised in the SLC
Gymnasium, honoring their accomplishment.
This year's SLC Athletics Department Appreciation Award was
presented to the new Vikings women's soccer head coach,
Natasha Agaoglu. As the former men's soccer
assistant coach, Natasha works with both the women's and men's
teams long after the season finishes. She works with the programs
to enhance her players performance on and off the field.
The Fanatics Sportsperson of the Year award is given to an
individual who exemplifies playing hard but fair, working as a
team, and appreciating the opportunity to compete. This year's
winner from the men's soccer team, Adam Wood,
naturally demonstrates the true spirit of sport and appreciates
time spent with his teammates.
Vikings women's rugby player, Brooke Van Guyze
was awarded The Barry Ellerbeck Award for having outstanding work
ethic, dedication and has volunteered to develop and promote sport
and activities on campus. Brooke works very hard as a gym
supervisor, assisting with several student life and athletic events
around campus, while enrolled in the challenge Nursing program, and
playing varsity rugby.
Female and Male Academic Athletes of the Year awards went to
Stephanie Doornekamp and Eric
Jadowskie. From the Bachelor of Business Administration
program, Stephanie maintained an astonishing 3.9 GPA in addition to
being a peer-tutor, and a member on the SLC Enactus team. She is
also one of the most dominant female rugby players in the OCAA,
posting 22 points in only four games. Eric is the clear leader of
the men's rugby program, as described by head coach Brad
Greenwood. He is a fierce competitor on the field, and
brings the same attitude in the classroom, achieving a 3.65 GPA in
the Energy Systems Engineering Program.
A tribute was given to the graduating athletes individual received
a special gift, rewarding them for their time and dedication to
Vikings Athletics. This year's graduating athletes are:
