ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Humber Hawks announced their 2013-14 male and female athletes of the year, with four standout student-athletes receiving the honour.
On the men's side, Alex Dumais and Mario Orestano were named co-winners. Dumais, a fifth-year golfer, had an incredible season in which he led the charge for a Hawks team that won an eighth consecutive OCAA championship. The three-time CCAA national champion was named to both the CCAA all-Canadian and all-tournament team, while winning an individual silver at the OCAA championship. Dumais, who also won the Fanshawe Invitational gold medal and was the Toronto Star amateur champion, is the recipient of multiple CCAA academic all-Canadian awards.
Orestano steered the soccer team team to their fourth consecutive OCAA title and second straight CCAA national championship, the most impressive run in the program's history. The fifth-year forward was named to the OCAA all-star team, and at the end of the season named to the prestigious CCAA all-Canadian team as well - a fitting end to a career that coincided with the Hawks men's soccer team's rise amongst the elite colleges in Canada.
Kelly Nyhof and Tracy Wong were named female athletes of the year, with Nyhof wrapping up one of the greatest careers in Hawks history. The fifth-year middle led Humber to a seventh consecutive OCAA title, and was named a CCAA all-Canadian for the third straight year. An exclamation mark on her year, and career, came when she was named CCAA player of the year at season's end; she also represented Canada this past summer at the FISU World University Games. Kelly shattered Humber's point's record with a career total of 1,186, also being the first Hawk ever inducted into the Humber varsity hall of fame while active.
Wong, a fourth-year badminton star, was named CCAA player of the year for the second consecutive time. Each of her four seasons have resulted in being named both OCAA player of the year and to the CCAA all-Canadian team, a nearly unheard of accomplishment. Wong capped her unbelievable 2013-14 season with a gold medal in OCAA mixed doubles and CCAA mixed doubles silver medal, and was just named to Canada's FISU World University Games team for the second time - Tracy is the lone CCAA player representing the country, highlighting the significance and impressiveness of the accomplishment.
These four athletes all had incredible seasons, and their accomplishments and dedication went a long way in making the 2013-14 season such a great one for the Hawks.
