Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Iffy Chiekwe
School: George Brown
Program: Recreation Management
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Dartmouth, N.S.
In two victories over the weekend, Chiekwe averaged 21.5 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 steals, and two assists while shooting 55.2 per cent from the field. The fourth-year guard scored a team-high 17 points in an 85-74 victory over Loyalist on Jan. 25. Chiekwe's best performance came a day later against St. Lawrence. Chiekwe scored seven of a season-high 26 points in overtime while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds in a 100-92 victory. It marks the first time this season the George Brown Huskies won back-to-back games.
Mélany Delisle
School: La Cité
Program: Business Administration
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Gatineau, Que.
Recording a dozen digs at home against Seneca on Jan. 25, Delisle moved into fifth place all-time in OCAA career digs. With an additional eight for La Cité against Georgian the following day, Delisle's total now stands at 812, moving past Julie Ann Milling of St. Clair who recorded 802 in four seasons between 2016 and 2020. Delisle has two matches remaining with La Cité Coyotes this regular season to add to the milestone. The fourth-year libero currently has 206 digs for the season, good for fourth among OCAA players.
Malik Grant
School: Humber
Program: Recreation & Leisure
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
In a 108-69 win over the Conestoga Condors at home on Jan. 22, Grant became just the fourth Humber Hawk in history to score 40 or more points in a game. In 29 minutes of action, the fourth-year power forward finished 17-of-23 (74.0 per cent) shooting from the floor, including five-of-seven (71.4 per cent) from beyond the three-point arc. Grant also contributed 11 rebounds for a double-double as well as six assists and four steals. Grant now sits 41 points away from becoming the 16th Humber student-athlete to join the 300-point club.
Jacob Masters
School: St. Clair
Program: General Arts & Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Masters helped lead the St. Clair Saints to a pair of wins this week, averaging 21.5 points in each game. On Jan. 22 the fourth-year guard scored 30 points in a 96-78 home court victory over the Lambton Lions. Masters' totals included six makes from three-point range while adding five rebounds and five assists. On Jan. 25 Masters recorded 13 points, two rebounds and two steals in a 92-67 road victory over the Fanshawe Falcons. Masters is currently ranked ninth in OCAA scoring averaging 16.4 points per game.
Reece Sommerfeld
School: Canadore
Program: Science - Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: North Battleford, Sask.
Sommerfeld was crucial in a pair of victories. Against the Centennial Colts on Jan. 25, the first-year setter played a pivotal role recording 29 assists, adding two service aces and five digs in a three-set sweep. Sommerfeld continued this stellar play the following day versus the George Brown Huskies, posting 46 assists, three kills, two aces, six digs and two blocks in a four-set victory. With 75 total assists over the weekend, Sommerfeld's consistent playmaking, court vision, and leadership were key factors in the Panthers' success.
Alyson Stolte
School: Redeemer
Program: Politics & International Relations
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Smithers, B.C.
Stolte was a key part of crucial back-to-back victories for the Redeemer Royals in their case for a home playoff match. The powerful fourth-year middle recorded a team-high 15 points on eight kills, five service aces and two stuff blocks in a five-set victory over Cambrian on Jan. 25. The following day Stolte recorded nine points on five kills, three aces and one block in a straight sets win over Boréal on senior's night. With eight aces on the weekend, Stolte climbed up the Redeemer record books, now sitting third all-time with 117.
