Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Zack Admans
School: Fanshawe
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: St. Thomas, Ont.
Admans was a key offensive contributor for the Falcons last week, driving Fanshawe to back-to-back wins to help them secure the third seed in the West Division. Admans put on a show against Conestoga on Jan. 30, finishing with a match-high 15 kills in a four-set victory. The fourth-year outside hitter followed that performance with an eight kill and two block stat line in a straight-sets sweep against Redeemer on Feb. 1. Admans is averaging a team-best 3.7 points per set as Fanshawe plays host to Loyalist on Saturday in a playoff crossover.
Sam Cormier
School: Niagara
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: St. Catharines, Ont.
Cormier led the Niagara Knights to a fierce five-set victory over the Cambrian Shield on Groundhog Day, posting a career-best 25 points on 21 kills and four stuff blocks. The second-year middle blocker, who is averaging 3.1 points per set, also contributed five digs and a pair of assists. Cormier finishes the OCAA regular season as the overall blocks leader with 60, averaging a league-best 1.11 per set, helping the Knights secure the third seed in the West Division and a home playoff match against the Canadore Panthers on Sunday.
Mae Drost
School: Conestoga
Program: Social Media Marketing
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Sioux Center, Iowa
In an electric final home game of the regular season, Drost did it all for the Conestoga Condors filling the stat sheet in all statistical categories. With Conestoga's two bigs in foul trouble, the first-year guard stepped up in a thrilling 62-61 overtime victory against Fanshawe on Jan. 31 to keep post-season dreams alive for the Condors. Drost scored 13 points and chipped in with 13 rebounds, seven assists, one steal and a block, just missing a triple double for the game. The Condors visit Lambton in a pivotal regular season finale on Friday.
AJ Edwards
School: Lambton
Program: Sports & Recreation Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Edwards' strong play continued this past weekend since joining the starting lineup of the Lambton Lions in the second semester. After a quiet outing on Jan. 31 against the Niagara Knights, the first-year guard was a major factor the following day in Lambton's 99-88 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers. Edwards scored a career-high 29 points to go along with 12 assists for a first collegiate double-double. Edwards also added four rebounds and four steals in the win. Edwards averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 assists, and 3.0 steals over the two games.
Sarah Laplante
School: Durham
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Basketball
Hometown: Montreal, Que.
A recent addition to the team, Laplante had a statement performance for the Durham Lords on Jan. 28 in a 66-61 win against Centennial. Laplante's 31 points were the most by a Durham player in a single game this season, surpassing the previous high of 19. Shooting efficiently, Laplante went 12-of-20 (60.0 per cent) from the field, including 7-of-11 (63.6 per cent) from beyond the three-point arc. Laplante stood out again on Jan. 31 in a 82-47 victory over St. Lawrence, registering 13 points, three assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals.
Baufy Mbaya Kongolo
School: Seneca
Program: Business
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Mbaya Kongolo had a standout performance for the Seneca Sting on Jan. 29 against their crosstown rival George Brown. The third-year outside hitter delivered a match-high 29 kills, adding a stuff block for 30 points in a harrowing five-set loss. Playing the top seed in the East Division two days later, Mbaya Kongolo contributed a match-high 14 kills and 17 points in a three-set loss to Georgian. The Sting will look to lean on Mbaya Kongolo's strong play this Saturday as they visit West Division top seed Humber in a playoff showdown.
