TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 6.
Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Alexis Cordeiro
School: Seneca
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Cordeiro helped the Seneca Sting remain unbeaten on the season, scoring a hat trick against the St. Lawrence Surge on Oct. 5. Cordeiro scored the match's first two goals in the opening 20 minutes before completing the hat trick just before halftime in a 7-1 victory. The second-year striker now has nine goals in seven matches and is tied for second in the OCAA in goals. Cordeiro is also one of four players averaging better than a goal per match. At 7-0-1, Seneca sits in a tie with Centennial atop the East Division standings with two matches remaining.
Quintin Earle
School: Durham
Program: Building Construction Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Baseball
Hometown: Oshawa, Ont.
Earle scored a pair of runs in a doubleheader on Oct. 5 as the Durham Lords swept the Humber Hawks to move into second place in the OCAA standings. Earle had a hot bat, making contact to bring three runners home in the twin bill. The first-year infielder was also defensive force, recording four putouts along with six assists to take the league lead with 33 over the season. Earle also leads the OCAA in double plays with nine. With the final weekend of the regular season approaching, playoff seeding is on the line for many teams, including Durham.
Kayla Makowich
School: Mohawk
Program: Health, Wellness & Fitness
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Softball
Hometown: Brantford, Ont.
It was an outstanding offensive week for the second-year catcher, setting a new Mohawk Mountaineers record for runs scored in a single season with 25, surpassing Makowich's record of 24 from the previous year. During a six-game week, Makowich batted .556, ranking up 10 hits, 10 runs scored, four RBIs and four walks. Makowich also set a personal milestone with a first career home run on Oct. 6 against the Lambton Lions. In that 21-11 win, Makowich nearly hit for the cycle, coming up just a double short of the achievement.
Matt Morris
School: Humber
Program: Professional Golf Management
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Golf
Hometown: St. Catharines, Ont.
Morris became Humber's first OCAA individual men's golf champion since 2017 and the 16th in program history at last week's OCAA Golf Championships at the Barrie Country Club. Forced into a playoff with Confederation's Nathan Lepore (Thunder Bay, Ont.) after three rounds, Morris tapped home a birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to claim the gold medal. It marked a second-straight medal at the championship after Morris earned silver last year. Morris and the Humber Hawks will now compete at nationals next week at RedCrest Golf Club in King, Ont.
Elaine Surjoprajogo
School: Humber
Program: Professional Golf Management
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
After three previous trips to the podium as an individual bronze medalist, Surjoprajogo is finally an OCAA women's champion. Beginning the final round in a three-way tie for first place, Surjoprajogo had the best score of the final 18 holes shooting a 77, good enough for a two-stroke victory over teammate Susan Chen (China). Surjoprajogo continues Humber's steak of five straight individual women's champions, and helped the Hawks win a fifth-straight women's team title. Surjoprajogo will now compete at nationals next week at RedCrest Golf Club in King, Ont.
Alessandro Vivolo
School: Algonquin
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
It was a big weekend for the Algonquin Wolves as they took on the Seneca Sting and Centennial Colts on back-to-back days. Against Seneca on Oct. 4, Vivolo scored in the 76th minute to tie the match at one and give the Wolves the momentum they needed to come away with a 2-1 win. On Oct. 5 against the Colts, the second-year centre back scored again, this time in the 58th minute, to tie the game 2-2. The match ended in a draw. Vivolo played a huge role in the Wolves earning four points over the weekend and regaining the top spot in the East Division.
