MARK HOFFMAN, HUMBER HAWKS VICTORIOUS AT CANADIAN UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

ASHBURN, Ont. – The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds captured their third consecutive national women's title, while the Humber College Hawks earned their third national men's title in the last eight years at the Canadian University/College Championship conducted by Golf Canada at The Royal Ashburn Golf Club in Ashburn, Ont.
 
The Thunderbirds, perennial favorites in the Championship's women's division, posted a four-day total +132, outlasting the University of Victoria Vikings by a single stroke to win their eighth national title in the Championship's nine-year history.
 
UBC's Kylie Barros, 19, of Edmonton, carded a final round 2-over par 74, finishing at +18 for the tournament to secure the women's individual division. Barros, who was recently crowned the 2011 NAIA women's champion, earned a 9-shot victory over Digby, N.S. native Anne Balser, 23, of the University of Victoria.
 
"I've had a good couple of weeks coming in, so I was able to build on that and have some good course management out there," said Barros. "The win means a lot because last year I came out and lost to Anne in a playoff, so I was happy to come back and get some redemption."
 
Rounding out the UBC scores were Haley Cameron, 20, of Kelowna, B.C., and Janelle Samoluk, 22, of Vancouver, who both finished T8 at +42. Lindsay Manion, 22, of Surrey, B.C. finished 10th at +44, while Vanessa Leon, 22, of Brampton, Ont. ended the tournament T11 at +45.
 
UBC Assistant Coach Kerri Moffat credits the Thunderbirds' championship success to sound recruitment practices and a holistic approach to player development.
 
"Every season we manage to bring in a team that has chemistry and good personalities that work well together and feed off one another on the course," Moffatt explained. "We try to stay as positive with the girls as we can be during the season and give them what they need to succeed at events like these. We're just so thrilled to be able to repeat."
 
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues finished third at +203, followed by the University of Waterloo Warriors in fourth at +219 and the Université Laval Rouge et Or rounding out the top-five at +232.
 
The Humber College Hawks earned the men's division title with an impressive 18-stroke victory over the UBC Thunderbirds, posting a four-day score of +38. The reigning Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Provincial champions finished with three players in the top 10, including individual champion, Mark Hoffman, 22, of Thornhill, Ont. Hoffman shot a 3-under par 69 on the day, posting a 1-under par for the championship, six shots better than Elmira, Ont.'s Garrett Rank, 23, of the University of Waterloo.  
 
"Between the five of us, it's probably the closest five guys I've ever been with and five of my best friends," Hoffman said, referencing Humber teammates, David Lang, 24, of Toronto, Adrian Cord, 24, of Etobicoke, Ont., Alex Dumais, 20, of Caledon, Ont., and Gregory Belsito, 22, of Thornhill, Ont. "We go everywhere together, we go out together, we have dinners together, we're always together during the week. We want to be there for each other on the course and it just makes it so much easier knowing one of your friends is helping you out."
 
Hoffman, Humber College's 2011 Co-Male Athlete of the Year, noted that the Hawks' outstanding season was the result of extensive preparation and a long-term vision.
 
"We've put so much work into this past spring and fall, even going back to last year, to just get ready for this because for most of us this was our last shot and we wanted to come out with a bang," Hoffman said. "We were in the gym three times a week…and we were in Scotland which helped us with the wind this week. That was a big key with us."
 
Following Humber and UBC was the Université Laval Rouge et Or at +74, while the University of Victoria Vikes finished fourth at +79 and the University of Western Ontario rounded out the top-five at +81.                
 
The 2012 Canadian University/College Championship will be held May 28 – June 1 at the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C.
