WINDSOR, Ont. - History was made on the links on Wednesday, as
Durham's Tiffany Albath shot a tournament-best 74
in the final round of the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic
Association (OCAA) Golf Championships held at the Roseland Golf
& Curling Club in Windsor, Ont.
The round gave Albath a 12-stroke victory over runner-up
Heather MacKenzie of St. Clair, and her second
straight OCAA individual championship. Albath becomes just the
third OCAA women's golfer to repeat, joining OCAA Hall of Fame
athletes Angela MacDonald (1998-99) of Humber and
Katie Ferguson (2001-02) of Georgian.
Albath earned three birdies on Wednesday, mixed in with three
bogies and one double bogey, costing her a chance at par. Despite
the one setback it was an impressive day, given that the previous
top round of 80 was shot by Albath on Tuesday. She was the
clubhouse leader from start to finish, shooting an 81 on
Monday.
Albath also joins rare company with her third OCAA individual
medal, earning silver in 2010. She joins four other women's golfers
who have achieved this feat, including Ferguson, Lisa
Proctor (Humber), Shauna Wilde (Humber)
and former teammate Kayleigh Kraemer (Durham).
MacKenzie becomes the top St. Clair golfer at an OCAA championship
since Michelle Charron's silver medal in 2005.
More importantly, MacKenzie combined with teammates Ashley
Unrau and Jordan Schatz to win St.
Clair's first-ever OCAA golf championship, taking the women's team
title by a combined score of 503, four strokes better than two-time
defending champion Durham. Unrau also earned an individual bronze
medal, finishing 23 strokes behind Albath.
Albath, MacKenzie, Unrau and Georgian's Alyssa
DeFoe earn OCAA All-Ontario awards for their top four
finishes. DeFoe finished 10 strokes out of individual medal
contention. Georgian earned team bronze with a total score of
556.
The tournament consisted of three 18-hole rounds, with the lowest
gross score through 54 holes determining the women's individual
championship. Women's teams consisted of two or three golfers, with
the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their
total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores
after 54 holes win the team title.
Female golfers represented seven Ontario college campuses,
including Boréal, Durham, Fanshawe, Georgian, Humber, Mohawk
and St. Clair.
The 2012 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Golf
National Championship takes place October 15-19, hosted by Durham
College at the Oshawa Golf Club in Oshawa, Ont.
