PICKERING, Ont. - Over 40 student-athletes are set to compete at the 2025 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships. The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs Monday through Wednesday at Watson's Glen Golf Club in Pickering, Ont., and is hosted by Durham College.
Seven Ontario post-secondary institutions will be represented at the competition, including Confederation College (Thunder Bay), host Durham (Oshawa), Fanshawe College (London), Georgian College (Barrie), Humber Polytechnic (Etobicoke), Niagara College (Welland) and St. Clair College (Windsor).
It will be difficult to match last year's dramatic conclusion when Humber's Matt Morris (St. Catharines) needed four playoff holes to defeat Confederation's Nathan Lepore (Thunder Bay) for the men's individual championship. Three women's golfers were tied headed into the final round before Humber's Elaine Surjoprajogo (Brampton) secured the gold medal.
Golfers have competed in four separate OCAA invitationals this month leading into OCAA provincials. The Humber Hawks men's team won three of the events they took part in and look poised to wrestle the OCAA title from the defending champion St. Clair Saints. Humber's Mike McCullough (Vaughan) was a two-time winner on the mini-tour.
Both Georgian's Bryden Dilley (Barrie) and Humber's Susan Chen (Zhengzhou, China) were two-time winners on the women's side. The Humber women's team have won an unprecedented five straight OCAA banners and look to make it a half-dozen at Watson's Glen.
The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The men's and women's player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.
Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.
Designed by Kevin Holmes, Watson's Glen in North Pickering is a links-style course featuring bent grass tees, fairways and greens. Water comes into play on 11 holes and 90 well-placed bunkers add to the challenge.
OCAA golfers will participate in a practice round on Sunday before teeing off for real on Monday. Daily results at the championships will be available online via the championship website and OCAA.com.
The top OCAA golfers and teams will move on to compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association PING Golf National Championships. The event takes place at Desert Blume Golf Club in Desert Blume, Alta., from Oct. 14-17 and will be hosted by Medicine Hat College.
