PICKERING, Ont. - Mike McCullough's (Vaughan) hot run to the season continued in Round 1 of the 2025 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championships on Monday.
After winning two of the lead-in events this month, the Humber golfer shot a one-under par 71 to take a one-stroke advantage over three others, including teammate Jack Gratrix (Sunderland). Also shooting par on Monday were Fanshawe's Cohen Adamson (Kemptville) and last year's runner-up, Nathan Lepore (Thunder Bay) of Confederation.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Georgian's Chris Miller (Huntsville) and Fanshawe's John Van Bilsen (Glencoe), both shooting a one-over 73.
In the men's team competition, Humber currently holds a nine-stroke advantage over Fanshawe. St. Clair sits in third position, 11 strokes back.
In the women's competition, Humber's Susan Chen (Zhengzhou, China) shot a two-over 74 for a three-stroke lead over St. Clair's Justine Gorham (Amherstburg). Humber's Jordon Newlands (Toronto) sits in the bronze position, seven strokes back. Humber women's team leads St. Clair by seven strokes.
Over 40 student-athletes are competing at this year's championships. The scheduled 54-hole tournament runs through Wednesday at Watson's Glen Golf Club in Pickering, Ont., and is hosted by Durham College.
Seven Ontario post-secondary institutions are represented at the competition, including Confederation College (Thunder Bay), host Durham College (Oshawa), Fanshawe College (London), Georgian College (Barrie), Humber Polytechnic (Etobicoke), Niagara College (Welland) and St. Clair College (Windsor).
The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds, weather permitting. The men's and women's player posting the lowest gross score through 54 holes will earn their respective individual championship.
Men's teams consist of four or five golfers, with the top four individual scores of each round contributing to the total team score. Women's teams consist of two or three golfers, with the top two individual scores of each round contributing to their total score. Schools with the lowest aggregate of gross scores after 54 holes win the respective team titles.
Designed by Kevin Holmes, Watson's Glen in North Pickering is a links style course featuring bent grass tees, fairways and greens. Water comes into play on 11 holes and 90 well-placed bunkers add to the challenge.
Daily results at the championships will be available online via the championship website and OCAA.com.
The top OCAA golfers and teams will move on to compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association PING Golf National Championships. The event takes place at Desert Blume Golf Club in Desert Blume, Alta., from Oct. 14-17 and will be hosted by Medicine Hat College.
