The Loyalist College men's basketball team will start the new
season under the leadership of coach Richard
Whitfield from Napanee. Building upon years of combined
coaching, and club, varsity and recreational player experience,
Richard brings a defensive style to the game and plans a very
disciplined style of basketball for the Lancers.
Richard has coached Guardsmen club ball and the LaSalle Secondary
School team in Kingston, and was assistant coach at the Royal
Military College (RMC) for a year. He has five years of combined
experience as a varsity player with RMC and St. Lawrence College,
where he won the Rookie of the Year award.
"The goal is always to develop better players – on and off
the court," said Richard Whitfield. "I want them to bring the
defence mindset to the forefront and I'm energized by the challenge
of showing the team how they can make this happen. I'm very
grateful to have the opportunity to coach at Loyalist and I'm
looking forward to an exciting and competitive season this
year."
"Richard has already shown his commitment to the team and has got
off to an excellent start by actively recruiting throughout the
province for the fall season," said Jim Buck,
Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation. "The recruiting camps
he is planning to hold at Loyalist will help immensely. Kids from
outside the area will be introduced to the College and the
Belleville community and it will give them an opportunity to see
the great things we have to offer. The Lancer team tryouts begin
the first week of classes and we welcome Richard's experience as
the season's new varsity team takes shape."
