NIAGARA 90, SAULT 47 (FINAL)
The Niagara College Knights men's basketball team got their 2011-2012 regular season off to a good start with a 90-47 win over the Sault College Cougars on Saturday night.
Five players reached double digits in scoring.
First-year guard Alex Campbell (Brampton, Ont.) led a well-balanced attack with 14 points, one more than sophomore Jimmy Bilenga (Hamilton, Ont.) and rookie Ashton Stephenson (Brampton, Ont.), Campbell's high school teammate at Brampton Centennial. Matt Poirier (St. Catharines, Ont.) scored 12 points in his Ontario College Athletics Association regular season debut and Alex Shah (St. Catharines, Ont.) contributed 10 in the victory.
Rashad Morley (Nassau, Bahamas) was a presence that the Cougars had difficulty reckoning with under the basket. He had a game-high five blocked shots for Niagara. "They had a tough time with him in the middle," Knights head coach Steve Atkin said in praising the play of the 6-foot-5 forward.
Sault College is in the midst of rebuilding its men's basketball program and, at times, Niagara played down to the level of the competition in Saturday's game.
"But the fellows regrouped and played consistent ball. Everybody played and everybody scored, which is always nice to see," Atkin said.
