MOHAWK WINS GEORGE BROWN MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNEY
The reigning OCAA and CCAA champion Mohawk Mountaineers captured the 35th annual George Brown Huskies Men's Basketball Tournament in Toronto Saturday (Jan. 5).
The reigning OCAA and CCAA champion Mohawk Mountaineers captured the 35th annual George Brown Huskies Men's Basketball Tournament in Toronto Saturday (Jan. 5).
Mohawk defeated host George Brown 80-68 in the championship game. Andrew Cicuttini scored 15 points and 11 rebounds. Manny Campbell had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Alex Reis contributed nine rebounds.
Earlier Saturday, in semifinal play, the Mountaineers topped the Fanshawe Falcons 76-62. Campbell had 18 points and seven rebounds, Taylor Dowhaniuk had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Friday, Mohawk beat St. Lawrence Vikings of Kingston 70-53 in their opening match. Dowhaniuk had 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the attack.
Dowhaniuk was selected tournament MVP and Campbell was named an all-star.
Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said it was a nice way to bridge the semesters. "We got better with each game," said Jonker. "Taylor was great all three games. We look forward to a week of practice before opening the second semester next Sunday at home against Canadore."
