SENECA 79, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 64
With a new coaching staff and a number of new players, few knew what to expect when the Seneca Sting men's basketball team stepped on the floor Friday night in their 2012-13 home opener. Fans were treated to an up-tempo pace of play with great shooting and highlight-reel dunks.
Needless to say, fans were appreciative of the product on the court and they let the home team hear them as the final seconds ticked away. The sound of whistling, hands clapping and vuvuzelas echoed throughout the Hive as the home team scored a 79-64 victory over the visiting St. Lawrence Vikings.
The Sting came out sluggish early on as the Vikings took a slim 21-20 lead into the second quarter. Jahmal Edwards paced the Vikings with six points in the quarter while fourth year Vadim Hamilov matched Ewards with six of his own on 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe. Felix Adjei also scored six for the Sting in the first quarter.
In the second, Seneca began to display the skill that had first year coach Bill Crowdis so excited about this team. Seneca outscored the St. Lawrence 22-13 in the quarter with Adjei dropping twelve points before heading into the locker room at the half.
The third quarter brought the home fans to their feet with a near perfect display of both offence and defense by their Sting. Seneca outscored the Vikings 26-5 in the quarter with Hamilov (10) and Jamal Boyce (9) leading the way. The Vikings made just two baskets to fall behind 68-39 heading into the final frame.
St. Lawrence looked to make things interesting in the fourth, but Seneca had too large of a lead to overcome. In the end, the Vikings outscored the Sting 25-11, but still fell by 15.
Hamilton had 18 points while Adjei added 16 and Boyce 15. Sangee Martin and Edwards paced the Vikings with 12 points each.
The Seneca Sting (2-0) will host George Brown on Tuesday at 8 p.m. while the St. Lawrence Vikings (0-1) will travel to Georgian on Saturday afternoon.
