SENECA 93, DURHAM 90
OSHAWA, Ont. – It came down to the wire on Tuesday night between Durham and Seneca in OCAA men's basketball action, as the Sting were able to come up with a 93-90 win over the Lords at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
Midway through the fourth quarter the Lords built their lead to 15, however the Sting managed to claw their way back in the game thanks to a couple of costly turnovers by the Lords.
Trailing by one point with 16 seconds left on the clock, Christoff Pierre (Brampton, Ont.) hit two free throws to give the Lords a one point lead. Unfortunately for the Lords, a defensive miscue in their own on an inbounds pass, resulted in an open three pointer that dropped for the Sting.
The Lords stormed down the court and missed an attempt to tie up the game, sending the Sting to the free throw line after a foul. Seneca made one of two attempts, giving the Lords another opportunity to tie up the game with a Hail Mary. Unfortunately for Durham, the ball ricocheted off the back board and rim, giving Seneca the three point win.
Early in the game, the Lords fell behind early 23-19 after the first quarter but were able to show some resiliency by matching the Sting's fast offensive tempo by converting 5-of-8 three point attempts. Despite shooting 55 percent from the field and the Sting only converting on 38 percent of their field goal attempts, the game remained tied 41-41 heading into halftime.
Led by Jamal Boyce and Felix Adjei with 28 and 24 points respectively, the Sting shot 55 percent in the second half during their comeback including a 38-28 advantage in the fourth quarter.
The Lords (2-6) were led again by Anthony Ottley (Brampton, Ont.) who had a double-double with 32 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
Durham falls to 2-6 on the year while the Sting improve to 7-1. The Lords will hit the road on Friday night as they take on the Fleming Knights (2-7) in Peterborough. Game time is 8 p.m.
