FANSHAWE 92, ALGOMA 89
The Fanshawe Falcons men's basketball team snapped a four game losing streak on Saturday night. The Falcons defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 92-89, improving to 13-6 with one game left in the regular season.
Algoma brought strong outside shooting to the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre. Algoma freshman Samy Mohamed had 10 points in the first and his team led 27-18 after the opening quarter.
Algoma led by as many as 12 in the second quarter until a 12-0 run, which included a four-point play from Chavaun Miller-Bennett, made the score 39-39. Algoma took the lead into the half though, 48-44.
Early in the third, a Bryan McDonald three pointer gave the Falcons their first lead of the game. The Falcons outscored the Thunderbirds 26-13 in the third quarter to lead 70-61 heading to the fourth.
Algoma was within two points several times in the fourth quarter. The game was close all the way to the end. With 13.8 seconds to go, Boyd Vassell hit two free throws to put the Falcons up 90-86. A Thunderbird three point basket brought the game to within one point, before Vassell nailed two more free throws. Samy Mohamed had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but his shot bounced off the rim and the Falcons escaped with the victory.
Boyd Vassell led the Falcons with 22 points in the game. Samy Mohamed led Algoma with 24 points and was 6-of-8 from behind the arc.
"They (Algoma) shot the ball extremely well in the first half and we knew they couldn't keep that up," said Fanshawe head coach Tony Marcotullio. "We told our guys to keep plugging away and we could come back. But both teams had guys missing due to injury and I would really like to see both teams play again at full tilt."
The Falcons will play their final regular season against Sault College (5-13) Sunday at 3 p.m.
