ST. LAWRENCE (K) 93, DURHAM 66
KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College men's basketball team snapped their two game losing streak in front of a packed crowd on Wednesday, defeating the Durham College Lords by a score of 93-66.
"After a couple tough losses to start the season, we told the guys all week that we need to play a solid game from beginning to end. No more of this one or two strong quarters. Tonight, we achieved a solid game from beginning to end," said Vikings head coach Barry Smith, returning for his 22nd year.
"There's still lots that we need to work on, but overall we're very pleased with the effort and final result tonight," Smith added.
In the second half, the Vikings got the ball to first-year player Donald Gibson, who would muscle his way to the rim consistently, to score off the backboard and in. Gibson would go on to lead the team with 20 points. Brad Richards would lead the team with 12 rebounds, while scoring 16 points.
Other key stats in the game was the Vikings beating the full court press by Durham, and holding them to only two three-pointers in the entire game (compared to eight three-pointers by SLC). What seemed like was going to be an issue for the Vikings during the pre-season turned into a positive on Wednesday night, as SLC out-rebounded Durham 54-33.
The Vikings next game takes place at home on Sunday, Nov. 3 when they host the 0-1 La Cité Coyotes. Game time is 1 p.m.
Prior to the game, the SLC Athletics & Recreation hosted a free community BBQ where all students, staff, faculty, parents, and fans were offered hot dogs, sausages, chips, and pop with free entry into the first game of the season, while enjoying some live entertainment.
"We had a great turnout for tonight's game, saw some familiar faces and some new ones that we hope continue to come to our home games," said SLC athletic director Herb Steacy.
"Our thanks go out to Glenn Vollebregt (president and CEO), Gord MacDougal (senior VP advancement, student & external affairs), and Charlie Mignault (director of business development) for their help in running the BBQ and live entertainment tonight. We fed a lot of people tonight, and we could not have done it without their help."
