FANSHAWE 79, NIAGARA 73
LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe men's basketball team completed four-game sweep of the Niagara Knights after defeating the men's basketball team 79-73 late Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Fanshawe women's and men's volleyball teams both won over the Knights 3-1 and then women's basketball team came out with the big victory 59-43.
With six minutes gone in the men's basketball game, the Niagara Knights had an 11-6 lead over the Falcons. Fanshawe settled down and had the game within two before the Knights scored four more and ended the quarter up 20-12.
The game started to get very physical in the second with both teams taking it hard to the rim. After being down 28-22, the Falcons came back with six straight and tied the game at 28 with a dunk by Dexton Freemantle, forcing the Knights to call timeout. The game stayed closed for the rest of the quarter but a big three pointer by Chavaun Miller Bennett as the halftime buzzer expired gave the Falcons a four-point lead at the half 39-35.
Fanshawe started the third on a 13-3 run including a pair of three pointers by Bryan McDonald. The Knights, down by 13, made a run of their own which was capped off by a steal and basket by Niagara's Aaron Chapman to retake the lead 58-56. A pair of free throws by Fanshawe's Chris Stanhope tied the game heading into the final quarter of play.
With three minutes to play in the game, Stanhope hit a huge three pointer to give the 71-69 lead to Fanshawe. He followed that up with a monstrous baseline jam which brought the entire gym to their feet. The Falcons held on to win the game 79-73.
Fanshawe's next game takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 at home versus the Redeemer Royals (7-8).
